Carrick is no stranger to Old Trafford, having previously served as interim manager during the 2021/22 season. His short spell saw wins against Villarreal and Chelsea, as well as a draw against Arsenal and an unbeaten record.
Carrick said in a statement: “It’s an honor to take on the responsibility of leading Manchester United. I know what it takes to succeed here. I’m now focused on supporting my players to reach the standards we expect at this great club, and I know this team is more than capable.”
“I have already worked with some of the players and have naturally continued to follow the team closely in recent years and have full faith in their talent, dedication and ability to succeed here.
“There is still much to compete for this season. We are ready to bring everyone together and give the performance that our fans’ loyal support deserves.”
United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, said: “Michael is a great coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United.
“He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season as we continue to build the club towards regular and sustained success.”
After leaving United, Carrick took charge at Middlesbrough. He led Boro to the play-offs during the 2022/23 season, but finished 10th in the 2024/25 season and was sacked in June 2025.
Silverware is now out of reach for Carrick, who is in his second spell as caretaker manager after United lost to Brighton in the FA Cup.
The Red Devils were already eliminated from the Carabao Cup earlier in the season, losing to Grimsby Town in the second round.
