This is his second time as interim manager at the club, following a stint in November 2021 that lasted just three games.
He spent around three years at Championship side Middlesbrough and was released at the end of the 2024-25 season.
“It is an honor to take on the responsibility of leading Manchester United,” said Carrick.
“I know what it takes to be successful here. My focus now is to help our players reach the standards we expect at this great club, and I know this team is more than capable.”
“I have already worked with some of the players and have naturally continued to follow the team closely in recent years. I have full faith in their talent, dedication and ability to succeed here.”
“There is still much to compete for this season. We are ready to bring everyone together and give the performance that our fans’ loyal support deserves.”
Supporting Carrick will be Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binion, Jonny Evans and Craig Mawson.
Darren Fletcher, who briefly took charge during United’s Premier League draw with Burnley and FA Cup third-round defeat against Brighton, will return to his role as lead coach of the club’s under-18s.
United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, said: “Michael is a great coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United.
“He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season as we continue to build the club towards regular and sustained success.”
During his time at Old Trafford, Carrick won five Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, two FA Cups and two Carabao Cups.
After retiring in 2018, he worked as a first-team coach under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, before taking over as interim manager for the first time in 2021.
Carrick is expected to be in the dugout at Old Trafford for Saturday’s Premier League derby after being considered ahead of Solskjaer following talks with the club’s chief executive Omar Berrada and Wilcox.
