Michael Carrick will take charge of Manchester United on an interim basis until the end of the season, after Darren Fletcher took charge for two games.
Michael Carrick will become Manchester United manager, with former England number two Steve Holland joining as his assistant. The two are scheduled to train for the first time on Wednesday.
Carrick’s appointment as interim head coach is expected to be confirmed later on Tuesday. Holland, 55, who was Gareth Southgate’s key deputy during his time as England manager, will return to the Premier League for the first time since a long stint at Chelsea. In his most recent role, he was fired as manager of Japan’s Yokohama F. Marinos in April.
Jonny Evans, Jonathan Woodgate and Travis Binion will also be part of Carrick’s backroom staff. Former Leeds United, Newcastle and England defender Woodgate will be Carrick’s number two at Middlesbrough, with Evans and Binion assisting Darren Fletcher in last week’s games against Burnley and Brighton. Evans was appointed first-team coach ahead of the trip to Turf Moor, while Binion has been promoted from his role in the academy and will remain in the first-team set-up for the remainder of the season.

However, Fletcher will return to the Under-18s after suffering a draw against Burnley and a defeat against Brighton in his two games as manager.
Fletcher, 41, was aware his interim period would last just two games and was not a serious candidate for the role until after the season as United wanted experience for the remainder of the season.
The Scot was given the chance to remain on the first-team staff under Carrick, but has opted to return to his role as head coach of the Under-18s for the remainder of the season.
Carrick has emerged as the front-runner for the job after impressing chief executive Omar Berada and director of football Jason Wilcox during a face-to-face meeting last Thursday. His first game will be Saturday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
