Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly in the running for the top job at Real Madrid if the Spanish giants decide to shake up their coaching team this summer.
Real Madrid announced on Monday that a mutual agreement has been reached for Xabi Alonso to step down after less than eight months in the role. Alvaro Arbeloa, who was the manager of Real Madrid B during the first half of the 2025/26 season, was immediately appointed as his successor.
Despite Arbeloa’s appointment, rumors are swirling that Klopp could be a candidate to take over the reins at Real Madrid. The German tactician has been consistently linked with the position throughout his career, but has maintained since leaving Liverpool in the summer of 2024 that he has no plans to return to management.
However, Sky Sports Germany has now suggested that Klopp is being considered as a potential head coach at the Santiago Bernabéu. Despite Klopp’s long-term commitment to Red Bull and being deeply involved in the project, Real Madrid is reportedly a big attraction.
If Real Madrid make a serious approach, 58-year-old Klopp is thought to seriously consider an offer.
Speaking on ServusTV On following Alonso’s departure from Real Madrid, Klopp was asked if his mobile phone was ringing. Manager Klopp was quick to defend Alonso and share his thoughts on his sacking.
“It wasn’t from Madrid, but it was (sounding),” Klopp confessed. “But certainly there were some people who felt the need to contact me directly about this.
“First of all, I think this is another sign that something is not working right now.
“For Xabi Alonso to be forced to leave Madrid after just six months, given his age and the amount of work he has done, given what an outstanding coaching talent he has shown over the past two years at Leverkusen, it says a few things.
“On the one hand, it shows that today we are running out of time.
“On the other hand, Real Madrid’s expectations are obviously huge. To make a decision like this in this heated competition after yesterday’s loss to Barcelona in the cup final says a lot.
“I think I’ve already heard the rumors for a while, and now I don’t know if your question is there, but this has nothing to do with me and didn’t trigger anything for me. It’ll probably be a follow-up question.”
“I was surprised. I really was. I was really surprised. After that, a few people messaged me and I responded with different emojis.”
