Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai had a rollercoaster night as the Reds secured a place in the FA Cup fourth round with a 4-1 win over League One side Barnsley at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Arne Slott has confirmed he will question Dominik Szoboszlai about his verbal abuse against Barnsley. The Hungarian endured a rollercoaster night at Anfield on Monday night.

He put the Reds ahead with his sixth world-class shot of the season, before Jeremy Frimpong doubled Liverpool’s lead with an outstanding goal of his own.

But after that, things went downhill for Szoboszlai and Liverpool. An inexplicable mistake by a midfielder gave Barnsley a golden chance to close the gap by attempting an inexplicable backheel just meters from goal.

He missed wide and Adam Phillips scored. In the end, Liverpool secured victory with late goals from Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.

However, Slott remained unhappy with the midfielder and claimed he would talk to him after the mistake was branded “disrespectful” by Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane. After full-time, Slott said in an interview with TNT Sports: “What does he mean by rude?

“I don’t think you should do that in a Premier League match, a League Cup match, a friendly or a training session. It’s a strange choice and I have an opinion on it, but I’ll keep it to myself and talk to Dom about it.”

Szoboszlai apologized to his teammates after the game. He said: “I’m sorry again to the team. We made a simple mistake and made it difficult for the team. But things happen in football. We will move on and move on to the next round.”

However, Szoboszlai was much happier with the goal, adding another long-range shot to his impressive showreel. The midfielder added: “Yeah, I finally got into my position and I didn’t think too much. If I had a chance to take a shot, I just took advantage of the chance and took the shot and in the end I scored a very good goal.”

Asked whether Szoboszlai’s attempted backheel was “disrespectful”, Hourihane said: “I was a little disappointed with our goal. I don’t think any player would do that against Chelsea, against Arsenal or in a Champions League game. To be honest, I’m a little disappointed with that. I thought our players were at the top.”

“Yeah, potentially (that was rude). He doesn’t do that against Arsenal, he doesn’t do that against Chelsea, he doesn’t do that in a Champions League game. He doesn’t do that.”

Liverpool’s victory set up a fourth round encounter with Premier League rivals Brighton.
