Michael Carrick will return to Old Trafford for the second time as manager after beating Ole Gunnar Solskjær to take over as manager and will hope to have as much success as his first spell.

Michael Carrick looks set to take over for the second time at Old Trafford after the former midfielder beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to take over as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

However, the Norwegian is now out of contention following negotiations over the weekend. This opens the door for Carrick to return to management after being sacked by Middlesbrough in the summer.

This also hints at a return to Old Trafford, where he coached after retiring, but following Solskjaer’s departure, he was also given command of three games in 2021.

In fact, Carrick has enjoyed his first stint in the hot seat in a very positive way and is hoping to do the same again this time around. Mirror Football relives his first spell as caretaker manager to see if he can really do it.

Following Solskjaer’s sacking, United acted quickly to appoint Carrick as interim manager on 21 November 2021. The former midfielder was a coach under Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer.

He oversaw a 2-0 win against Villarreal in the Champions League, making a dream start. In Spain, Cristiano Ronaldo gave United a late lead and Jadon Sancho sealed the win just before stoppage time.

After that, all eyes were on Carrick’s first league game as manager, his first match against Chelsea. Sancho was on the scoresheet again as he gave United the lead at Stamford Bridge.

However, Jorginho’s second-half penalty leveled the score and both teams secured a share of the points. This leaves United in 8th place in the Premier League.

Ahead of Carrick’s third match as manager, against Arsenal at Old Trafford, it was announced after the game that he would be stepping down in favor of interim manager Ralf Rangnick. However, his transfer was not confirmed by the deadline, leaving Carrick as the decision-maker for the match against Arsenal.

And it produced perhaps his most impressive result, a 3-2 come-from-behind victory. Emile Smith Rowe gave the Gunners the lead at Old Trafford, but Bruno Fernandes equalized just before half-time.

Ronaldo put the hosts ahead just after the break, but Martin Odegaard equalized minutes later. However, there was no denying that United and Ronaldo scored again to ensure victory.

When asked what he learned from those in charge, Carrick said: “That’s a good question. Obviously, a lot has happened in the last week or 10 days and I’ve definitely had to adapt and take on new challenges and some skill sets that are probably out of my comfort zone and things I haven’t had to work on before.”

“Sometimes it was fun to see how I handled it. You don’t know until you’re in a situation like that and you have to learn on the job. Most of the time I can say I enjoyed it.”

He eventually left at the end of his interim managerial period and was away from football for 10 months before being appointed to Championship side Middlesbrough. Carrick spent just under three years at Riverside, leading the club to the play-offs and the Carabao Cup semi-finals, before being sacked in June this year.
