Some Manchester United bosses fear Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s return could be a setback for the club, with Manchester United expected to appoint Michael Carrick as interim head coach until the end of the season this week.

Solskjaer has been acting as caretaker manager before being handed a permanent role at Old Trafford and he would be a popular choice, but the club are cautious about appointing someone who was previously sacked by United.

The i Paper added: “In the eyes of the Ineos powerbrokers, the fact that Solskjaer has only been in charge once in more than four years since leaving Old Trafford after a disappointing short spell in Turkey with Besiktas is not the kind of experience needed to steady a sinking ship.”

“We understand that Solskjær’s long-term ambitions were a concern for some. Carrick is well aware that this is a role until the end of the season and permanent candidates will be lined up and appointed in the summer.”

“However, it is understood that even if Solskjær was given an interim role, the 52-year-old harbored ambitions to challenge for the job on a full-time basis again if his temporary spell went well.

Spurs hijack Villa’s Gallagher transfer

Conor Gallagher was thought to be set to join Aston Villa on an initial loan deal, while Tottenham are widely reported to be close to agreeing a contract with Atletico Madrid.

Spurs are willing to pay £35m for the midfielder, with Gallagher keen to return to England by joining Atletico from Chelsea in 2024.

The Telegraph wrote: “The 25-year-old has mainly been a substitute for Atlético in recent weeks, starting just two of the last seven games in all competitions. He was a key player in Diego Simeone’s first season under manager, making 50 appearances.”

“Spurs have long admired Gallagher and wanted to sign him from Chelsea in the summer of 2024, but their London rivals would not offer him anything less than £45m.

“Gallagher has played 22 times for England but only one game for his country since 2024. A return to the Premier League could help his international ambitions in the countdown to this summer’s World Cup.”

“The approach by Spurs comes after midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was forced to miss three months after sustaining a hamstring injury in last week’s game against Bournemouth.”

Paqueta to Brazil

West Ham are determined not to lose Lucas Paqueta in this January transfer window after it was revealed he wants to return to Brazil to play for former club Flamengo.

The Hammers have yet to receive an offer for Paqueta and the club are reluctant to sell the 28-year-old given they currently sit 18th in the Premier League.

The Telegraph added: “Paqueta has been suffering from a back injury in recent weeks and is believed to have visited West Ham’s training ground on Monday for further treatment. He did not feature in Sunday’s FA Cup win against Queens Park Rangers.”

“Paqueta’s future has been a constant source of speculation and uncertainty in recent years, particularly when Aston Villa expressed interest in signing him in the summer transfer window.

“The Brazilian memorably responded to Villa’s interest by pretending to answer the phone and celebrating West Ham’s goal, before throwing the phone away and kissing his shirt badge.”

Looney Eyes returns as director

Wayne Rooney still dreams of managing in the Premier League and is said to be inspired by his brother’s FA Cup success, The Sun reports.

John Rooney led Macclesfield to a shock victory over holders Crystal Palace, and Wayne Rooney watched the match as a pundit for the BBC.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “Wayne loves life as a pundit but has not given up on the idea of running a business again someday.

“Seeing his brother’s success first-hand highlighted how much he wants to be further involved in management.

“He has since spoken to supporters and admitted there is still unfinished business. He just has to wait for the right opportunity to come.”

“Wayne still believes he can succeed as a manager and it is his dream to eventually manage in the Premier League.”
