Arsenal academy manager Per Mertesacker has announced that he will step down at the end of this season, ending an eight-year spell in which he has produced some of the club’s best talent. Mertesacker helped develop the careers of promising players such as Ethan Nwaneri, Miles Lewis-Skelly and Max Dauman, earning him a beloved place within the club’s ranks.

He also played a key role in integrating former players Jack Wilshere and Adam Birchall into coaching roles within the club, while maintaining a close working relationship with manager Mikel Arteta. In addition to his contribution to the academy, Mertesacker was also a key figure during the managerial transition from Unai Emery to Arteta, working alongside Freddie Ljungberg as part of the backroom staff.

Mertesacker, a former player and multiple FA Cup-winning centre-half, has a deep understanding of the club and its values and will be difficult to replace.

Mertesacker said in a statement posted on Arsenal’s website: “This was a difficult decision as Arsenal is and always will be a very special club for me.”

“I am extremely grateful for the confidence the club has placed in me as I transition from being a first-team player directly into my role as Academy Director.

“Now is the time for me to move on, explore something new and push myself further. I remain focused on finishing the season strong, continuing to develop and develop young talent and support a seamless transition until my final days at the club.”

Richard Garlick, the club’s chief executive, commented: “We support Parr’s decision to pursue something new, but we will be very sad to see him leave at the end of the season.”

“We were fortunate to retain Mr. Parr as Academy Director after his playing career ended in 2018. He understands what Arsenal stands for and this has been consistent in his leadership, inspiring the Academy coaches, staff and young players in the Arsenal way, giving many the opportunity to grow and shine.”

“We are delighted that Parr will remain in his role until the end of the season while we focus on succession planning. With continued focus and investment in our academy, we will continue our pursuit of major trophies.”
