Manchester United’s FA Cup ambitions were dashed by Brighton in the third round, making it the first time since 1982 that they have been eliminated in both domestic cups at an early stage. For over 40 years, United have always managed to reach at least one round in either of the two tournaments. However, the loss to the Seagulls only added to the disappointment that started with the shock defeat at Grimsby Town.
United’s lackluster season meant the FA Cup was their last realistic chance of winning silver this season, but those hopes are now gone. Danny Welbeck’s goal against his former club was the decisive blow for Brighton. The Red Devils trailed for much of Sunday afternoon, and despite Benjamin Sesco showing a glimmer of hope late on, there was no hope of a comeback.
Earlier in the season, they made a dramatic comeback against Grimsby, scoring twice in the closing stages. However, in the end they lost in a thrilling penalty shootout.
In the Premier League, United, who are still without a manager following the sacking of manager Ruben Amorim, are 17 points behind leaders Arsenal, but are still in contention for Champions League qualification. Their dismal performance last season means there will be no European football this season.
Diogo Dalot expressed his disappointment at missing two big chances to score in the first half of the match.
The Portuguese defender believed that United had done enough to secure the victory, but Shay Lacey’s red card in the dying minutes of the game put them at a disadvantage, ultimately leading to their defeat.
Speaking to TNT Sports, he lamented: “To be honest, we did enough to win the game, but in the last moment we were on top of Brighton and the red card put us in a disadvantageous situation.”
“Overall it’s very disappointing because we wanted to get through. All the players were trying to find space, but like I said, it was really disappointing because I thought we deserved to win.”
With Mr Amorim sacked earlier this week and replaced by Darren Fletcher, Mr Dalot admitted negotiations were difficult.
He confessed, “It’s really difficult. There are always times when you have to find a way to quickly solve problems. We have to adapt and move on again.”
