Manchester United has announced its first quarter financial results, showing an operating profit of £13.3m, compared to a loss of £6.9m recorded in the same period last year. Following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a minority stake in Old Trafford in 2024, a comprehensive operational review aimed at cutting costs was launched.
The result has been widespread layoffs across multiple divisions, the economic benefits of which are shown in the latest financial results. The Red Devils released these financial figures on Thursday, confirming that the club made a profit in the first quarter.
United CEO Omar Berrada said: “These strong financial results reflect the resilience of Manchester United as we make significant progress in the club’s transformation.
“The difficult decisions we took last year have resulted in a more streamlined and effective organization to sustainably reduce costs and drive the club towards improved sporting and commercial performance over the long term.
“This has allowed us to invest in our men’s and women’s teams, which are in sixth and third place in the Premier League and Women’s Super League respectively.”Nevertheless, revenue fell by 2%, reflecting a lack of broadcast revenue in Europe and two fewer home matches in the quarter compared to the same period last year.
United currently sit sixth in the Premier League table and are on track to achieve their goal this season of securing European football. Qualifying for the Champions League will provide an additional source of income.
With games against Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Wolves on the horizon, a strong Christmas period will be key to keeping that going. Brian Mbeumo, Amad and Nouseir Mazraoui will be unavailable for most of these matches due to AFCON.
While the club believes the first quarter figures show progress in improving its financial position, insiders admit further effort and discipline is needed for long-term sustainability.
