Former Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has resigned from his role as head of financing and routes at Old Trafford after six months to spend more time with his family.
Manchester United have announced that Jonny Evans has resigned from his role as head of loans and pathways. The former defender took up the role in June following his retirement, but left after just six months.
His responsibilities included organizing loan transfers for up-and-coming talent and working with Jason Wilcox to “maximize the development of individual players and strengthen the process of preparing young talent to perform in the first team”. Upon his appointment, Evans declared: “I look forward to working with the next generation of talented players and helping them reach their full potential.”
The 37-year-old has now chosen to retire in order to prioritize time with his family and is thought to be taking a break from football before considering his next move. United officials confirmed that the breakup was proceeding smoothly and that Evans was leaving with the club’s full support and gratitude.

Evans’ move to management marked the end of his playing days. The centre-back came through the youth ranks and played twice at Old Trafford, making 241 appearances for the Red Devils.
The Northern Ireland international won the Champions League trophy, three Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups during his time at United, making 536 career appearances. Evans made 107 appearances for Northern Ireland and was awarded an MBE in 2023 for his contribution to sport.
In 2015, he moved to West Brom and then to Leicester City, where he did well for Brendan Rodgers’ side and won the FA Cup in 2021. Evans returned on a free transfer under Erik ten Hag, but was initially registered as a short-term employee and therefore paid minimum wage.
Evans appeared on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football in November and assessed Ruben Amorim’s system at the club. As for what Amorim wants from his side, Evans said:
“He likes to keep the structure of the team and not have too many moving parts. Instead of the whole back five moving in one direction, he will only move one player.”
