Belgian soccer legend Glen de Boeck has tragically passed away at the age of 54. The esteemed player, who won 36 caps for Belgium during his glittering career, suffered a severe brain haemorrhage and was in a coma for three days. He collapsed at home on Friday and was immediately taken to Antwerp University Hospital.
Sadly, the damage was too great for him to recover from. His family confirmed the former defender passed away on Sunday night surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by two daughters, Beau and Caro.
De Boeck started his career with local club FC Boom before moving to Mechelen.
Belgian giants Anderlecht signed the defender in 1995, where he served as their captain and played for 10 years until a serious knee injury forced him to retire in 2005.
After retiring, de Bec held the role of assistant manager at Anderlecht before starting his own managerial career.
His first managerial job was at Cercle Brugge, where he stayed for three years before taking over at Germinal Beerschot.
De Boeck then managed VVV Venlo in the Netherlands before returning to Belgium to manage Beveren, Mouscron, KV Kortrijk and Lokeren.
For his final managerial role, he returned to Belgian professional league club Kortrijk in 2023. He later became a well-known critic on Belgian television.
The de Becque family has experienced a heartbreaking year of personal loss. Earlier this year, Glenn lost his 80-year-old father Louis after a long battle with illness.
During the funeral, de Becque’s mother Louisette collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage.
Doctors then learned she had been battling pancreatic cancer and sadly passed away a month after her husband’s death.
