Championship upset as Bristol City vs. Millwall end in brawl | Soccer | Sports

Tensions escalated at Ashton Gate on Saturday as Bristol City and Millwall players and staff clashed after full-time in the Championship match. The Robins were left frustrated as Millwall took all three points and were unable to penetrate the visitors’ defence. A second-half goal from Mihailo Ivanovic gave Millwall the lead and they maintained that position until the end.

Despite three penalty appeals and a goal rescinded, Bristol City were unable to find a way back into the match and were left empty-handed. Tensions reached a boiling point at the final whistle, with Bristol City captain Jason Knight appearing to force Millwall manager Alex Neil to the sideline. This sparked a scuffle involving both players and staff, with Millwall assistant David Livermore appearing to be knocked to the ground in the confusion.

These dramatic scenes marked a chaotic end to the match and added an extra layer of drama to the championship. The defeat left Bristol City in seventh place, one point away from the play-offs, but the gap between them and the top three teams including Millwall has widened.

Millwall’s victory cements their place in third place, two points behind second-placed Middlesbrough, and keeps their hopes of automatic promotion alive. The difference between 3rd and 16th place in the division is just 9 points.

Once order was restored at Ashton Gate, both managers provided explanations for the flashpoint. Neal first suggested to the media that the confrontation was sparked by a refusal to shake his hand.

“At the end of the game I went to shake his hand (Bristol City manager Gerhard Struber) and he kind of pulled his hand away. We certainly weren’t the instigators in that.”

After the final whistle, Gerhard Struber appeared visibly upset and footage showed him having a lively discussion with match officials. The Bristol City manager had legitimate complaints about several controversial decisions, including multiple penalty appeals and a goal disallowed for offside.

Mr. Struber stood firm in his interpretation, replying, “That’s a big joke. I want to be clear: I showed him my hand twice, and he wasn’t ready for a handshake.”

Bristol City face a rapid turnaround as Leicester City visit on Wednesday night. The Robins will remain at home to welcome the Foxes, who arrived in high spirits following a comfortable 3-1 win over Derby County in the East Midlands derby.

Meanwhile, Millwall’s push for automatic promotion will see them head to Pride Park for a meeting with Rams, who will be looking to pick up more points. The Lions have boasted an excellent recent record against Derby, remaining unbeaten since 2020 and securing both a win and a draw against them during last season’s Championship campaign.
