“The club would like to thank Charlton staff and first responders who did everything they could, but unfortunately the supporter later died in hospital.
“The club would like to thank the supporters in attendance and the Portsmouth players and staff for their patience and understanding during this tragedy.
“Everyone at the club sends their deepest condolences to the families and friends of our supporters at this incredibly difficult time.”
Before the supporter’s death was confirmed, Portsmouth added in a statement: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to those involved and their families.”
Andrew Cullen, the club’s chief executive, told BBC Radio Solent: “This situation is not great for people who come to watch their team play football. Our hearts go out to that individual.”
“Our hearts also go out to the family, friends and supporters who were around us. We know what that means from the incident at Fratton Park earlier this year.
“That is our position and we must pay our respects to everyone affected by the incident and our thoughts are with them.”
The game was abandoned early in the first half with no score. The players left the pitch approximately 50 minutes before the match was officially called off. A reschedule has not yet been determined and details will be announced later.
