Alejandro Garnacho showed solidarity with former teammate Coby Mainu by liking a social media post by Manchester United legend Paul Scholes criticizing the club’s treatment of young players. The Argentinian’s move comes as England international Mainu continues to be sidelined by head coach Ruben Amorim. United stalwart Scholes slammed the treatment of academy products, particularly in light of Scott McTominay’s recent transfer activity at Napoli.
In a strongly worded social media post, Scholes accused Amorim of “ruining” the midfielder’s career. He said: “Bulls***. This kid is ruined by not letting him play for a team that can’t control the game of football! I hate to see a homegrown player leave, but now is the best for him, enough is enough.”
The post was shared on Mr Scholes’ Instagram account and quickly spread by United fan accounts. This caught Garnacho’s attention and he said, “I liked it.”
Despite moving to Chelsea over the summer, the winger clearly still feels a sense of camaraderie with his former team-mate.
Meanwhile, Amorim has had to justify his approach to United’s academy products, as none of his players have started a Premier League game this season.
“I just want to win,” he said. “I don’t see who it is and I don’t care. I’m just trying to get the best players on the pitch. I understand, of course, and my job is to answer that.”
“But you always ask me the same thing. I know what you mean. You love Coby. He’s leaving for England.”
“But that doesn’t mean I have to put Coby (in) in when I don’t feel he should. That’s my decision.”
Mainu only logged 261 minutes for his boyhood club, with his only start coming against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup.
According to reports, the midfielder is considering a loan move from United in the January transfer window as he grows increasingly frustrated with his limited first-team appearances.
Mainu requested to leave Old Trafford in the summer, but his request was refused and the Red Devils chose to keep him.
It is believed that a decision will be put on hold until after the African Cup of Nations, which begins this month and concludes with the final on January 17.
United are now without three players – Amad, Brian Mbeumo and Nousair Mazraoui – and the deadline for the competition in Morocco is set for December 15th.
