Real Madrid have announced that Trent Alexander-Arnold sustained a muscular injury in midweek’s match against Athletic Club. It was another blow for the England international, who has been plagued by injuries since his move from Liverpool. “As a result of the tests carried out today by Real Madrid’s medical services on our player Trent Alexander-Arnold, he was diagnosed with a muscle injury in the anterior quadriceps rectus femoris muscle of his left leg. He will be monitored,” the club said in a statement.
Following Real Madrid’s announcement, Spanish media reports estimated that the England defender could be sidelined for approximately two months due to this issue. The injury means Alexander-Arnold will miss the chance to return to England next week when Real Madrid take on Manchester City in the much-awaited Champions League.
He will also miss the Spanish Super Cup semi-final match against Atletico Madrid. This latest injury is a further setback for the 27-year-old since moving from Anfield to the Bernabéu in the summer.
The talented right-back is finding it difficult to secure a place in Xabi Alonso’s preferred starting XI, having missed seven games with a hamstring problem at the start of the season.
His slow start has been criticized in some quarters, and after Real’s 3-0 win over Bilbao, the Spanish press once again slammed Alexander-Arnold, despite providing an excellent assist during the match.
The low point of Alexander-Arnold’s time at Madrid came when he returned to Anfield to face Liverpool in the Champions League, losing 1-0. The defender came off the bench and played the final nine minutes against the struggling Premier League champions.
