2026 World Cup draw and decisions that could cost Britain millions of dollars | Soccer | Sports

Manager Arsene Wenger has vowed that the World Cup will deliver on its promise as the grandest show on earth. The former Arsenal manager and current head of global football development at FIFA made this commitment to ensure football’s governing body leads to absolute victory next summer. Coach Wenger spoke with enthusiasm at last summer’s Club World Cup, which served as a kind of dry run for the main tournament scheduled for June-July.

FIFA has ambitious ambitions for the 2026 World Cup. Wenger admitted the game was “not perfect”, a view echoed by Chelsea captain Reece James, who led his team to victory in the competition. Scorching temperatures proved to be a problem, with players and representatives demanding that matches not be held in the scorching sun.

The Frenchman is an outspoken club boss when it comes to criticizing international football and major competitions, making him the perfect ambassador for FIFA. Now, he stands as one of the key people who makes sure everything goes smoothly.

To FIFA’s credit, FIFA is paying attention and the kickoff schedule remains unconfirmed, which is why the draw has essentially become a two-day affair. England and Scotland will find out their group opponents in Friday’s main draw, but play-off teams such as Northern Ireland and Wales have also been invited to take part.

Three Lions manager Thomas Tuchel will attend a two-day coaching workshop in Washington where discussions will be held to finalize a 26-player squad for the 48-team competition, which will include an additional number of games compared to 2022.

The kickoff time and venue for the tournament, which begins June 11, will be a key topic of discussion among coaches.

Tuchel has already admitted he prefers games to start later, even if it means playing them in the early morning hours rather than in Europe’s prime time slot.

This will not be welcomed by home fans and could mean pubs and clubs lose out on millions of dollars in revenue if matches kick off well after midnight, as at the Club World Cup.

However, Europe’s major teams are likely to win slots in a combination of prime-time slots and later kick-off times to ensure everyone receives a fair share.

The United States has “indoor stadiums” that can host games under a fully air-conditioned roof, and Atlanta’s stadium is a great example of this.

Los Angeles and Dallas have similar stadiums and facilities, and the July 19 final is scheduled to kick off at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey at 3pm local time, 8pm UK time.

The lottery will be extended until Saturday. Teams will know their opponents on Friday, but the full game schedule, dates and venues will only be known 24 hours later.

This is clearly due to a tougher schedule, with TV companies also anxiously awaiting the announcement of England’s opponents.

England could face Scotland, and due to the pot draw order, teams in pots 2 and 3 are statistically more likely to be paired with higher seeds than in the UEFA play-off qualifiers, which include Wales and Northern Ireland.

Norway could be a surprise candidate, and it’s worth noting that Norway’s global superstar Erling Haaland will be represented in Washington after his father Alfie departed for the United States on Wednesday.

The old television tradition of a coin toss to determine who gets first pick against England still exists, and it’s up to the BBC and ITV to make the choice. Strategic decisions are always required, such as whether to choose additional group matches or advance to the final tournament.

US President Donald Trump will also be in attendance at the draw, and judging by his antics as Chelsea accepted the trophy at the Club World Cup, he’s probably keen to be in the spotlight.

Lottery details

Pot 1: Canada, Mexico, USA, Spain, Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany.

Pot 2: Croatia, Morocco, Colombia, Uruguay, Switzerland, Japan, Senegal, Iran, South Korea, Ecuador, Austria, Australia.

Pot 3: Norway, Panama, Egypt, Algeria, Scotland, Paraguay, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa.

Pot 4: Jordan, Cape Verde, Ghana, Curacao, Haiti, New Zealand, 4 European playoff teams, 2 intercontinental playoff teams.

Additional details

Teams will be assigned to their respective groups during a draw, but the full schedule will not be revealed until Saturday, when FIFA hosts another glitzy event announcing stadiums, kickoff times and venues. England will therefore find out their opponents after Friday’s draw.

However, the FIFA World Cup wall chart clearly shows that matches, not teams, are assigned to specific stadium venues. The exact location of England’s match will only be confirmed after the announcement, scheduled for 6pm on Saturday.

England’s ideal scenario would be to qualify for Group J, which could see them play two matches in Kansas City, their preferred training base for the World Cup.

Venues are divided into the Western region (Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles), the Central region (Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City), and finally the Eastern region (Atlanta, Miami, Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, New York/New Jersey).

For the first time ever, the draw will be divided in a manner similar to seeding in tennis, with wins in each group guaranteeing that the top four teams will not meet until the semi-finals. This means the top four seeds Spain, Argentina, France and England could meet in the semi-finals, harking back to the era of tennis greats Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

England will use Inter Miami’s facilities to set up a training base in Florida, where they will also play two friendlies. They must submit their preferred training-based options by January 10th.

Tickets for the World Cup will be available for purchase from December 11th.
