Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has said he is avoiding social media to protect his family as football managers face abuse online.
Research shows the Portuguese manager is one of the most targeted managers in the Premier League, with Liverpool’s Arne Slott and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe also frequently attacked.
A BBC investigation has revealed more than 2,000 “extremely abusive” social media posts about Premier League and Women’s Super League players and managers over one weekend in November alone.

The content also included threats of death and rape.

Asked how he would deal with such abuse, Amorim said: “It is normal to be exposed to abuse in any profession.

“I don’t read it. It’s to protect myself.”

Amorim even avoids listening to former players who serve as media pundits.

“I don’t look at the TV when I’m talking about Manchester United, not because I don’t agree with it, but most of the time I do it, but it’s a way for me to be healthy.

“My feelings as a coach are enough. I don’t need any other feelings. The only way – there is no other way – is to protect myself,” he said.

Amorim’s time at Old Trafford did not get off to a great start, with the team finishing in 15th place last season, the club’s lowest finish since 1973-74.

This season also got off to a disappointing start as United were eliminated in the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby. However, he has improved recently and will go into Thursday’s Premier League match against West Ham in seventh place.

Even if success were to return to Old Trafford, Amorim says he does not want to use social media, despite the temptation of financial rewards.

“We lose money from sponsors,” Amorim said.

“I could make a lot of money on Instagram, but it’s not worth more money or a few dollars to take care of my family and live a normal life.

“No one is tougher than me when we lose or when we don’t play well.

“It’s the only way to survive in this world, because now it’s so normal to be abused.”

Mysterious fitness allegations ahead of game against West Ham

United will be without Benjamin Sesco and Harry Maguire for the visit of West Ham.

Amorim also hinted that two other players will face fitness in the second half, but did not reveal who they were in the pre-match press conference.

However, United will be boosted by the return of Matheus Cunha.

The Brazilian attacking midfielder has missed the last two games after sustaining a bruise during training.

Despite scoring just one goal since joining from Wolves in the summer, Amorim knows Cunha can be an important player and is supporting his development.

“He still has a lot more to offer,” he said.

“He was at a different club, the pressure was different and he was struggling to score.

“He was thinking too much about numbers, but his influence within the team is important for us.”
