Newcastle missed out on two points in their Premier League home match against Tottenham at St James’ Park. The Magpies faced a Spurs side who had won just one of their last seven games since traveling to the North East for the Carabao Cup. Both teams were level at half-time, but Tottenham evaded the bullet when Joelinton’s powerful shot bounced off the post.
However, it was his compatriot Bruno Guimarães, who came on as a substitute, who broke the deadlock. Cristan Romero equalized for Spurs, but Newcastle hit back. However, Gordon’s late penalty seemed to have secured Newcastle the three points, but a second equalizer left the Magpies dejected. Here’s the Magpies’ performance against Spurs…
Aaron Ramsdale 6.
There were few saves, but they conceded two soft goals. The number one audition to replace Nick Pope was disappointing.
Tino Livramento 7.
He showed some maturity. I was shocked when Romero scored his second goal.
Malick Thiaw 6.
Cool collection. But the second equalizer would be disappointing.
Dan Byrne 5.
Romero’s goal should have been better. It looked like he might have saved Newcastle by winning a penalty, but in stoppage time the rest of the defense collapsed along with them.
Lewis Hall 6.
He was unable to block Kudus’ tying cross, but otherwise had a solid night.
Joelinton 6.
Unfortunately, it hit the post. He is being targeted hard by Spurs’ midfield enforcers.
Sandro Tonali 7.
He played his role well, but was substituted at half-time after only 31 touches.
Lewis Miley 7.
The teenager played a key role in this victory, retaining his place on merit. There was a warm round of applause at the time of the change.
Harvey Barnes 6.
He made some sharp runs and posed a threat. However, this was not enough on a night when Newcastle required an 8/10 performance.
He sent three crosses, but only one hit his mark.
Jacob Murphy 4.
I was given a great opportunity, but I couldn’t take advantage of it. Lacking momentum, it was no surprise that he was replaced just after an hour had passed.
He managed 10 crosses, but very few found their intended targets.
Nick Waltemaid 6.
It proved to be a handful. Things improved in the second half.
They weren’t at their best in injury time when the goal tied the game at 2-2.
Sub.
Bruno Guimarães 8 (Tonal 46).
Despite coming on as a substitute, he brought energy, inspiration and the equalizer, earning him Man of the Match honors. Man of the Match.
Anthony Gordon 8 (Burns 65).
He changed the game on the left side. He played an important role in the tying goal and then kept his cool to score the winning goal.
Anthony Elanga 6 (Murphy 65).
It made an impact. He gave them options, but they froze when they scored the second tying goal.
Fabian Schaal (for Miley 90).
*Replacements must play at least 15 minutes to be evaluated.
