Andre Onana has endured a rollercoaster few seasons since leaving Manchester United for Turkish club Trabzonspor, but his form does not seem to have done anything to improve his international prospects.
Andre Onana, who failed at Manchester United, is now at his lowest point in history after being left out of Cameroon’s squad for the African Cup of Nations. The goalkeeper joined Turkish side Trabzonspor in the summer after falling out of favor under coach Ruben Amorim.
Although things have improved recently, it wasn’t enough for Onana to get a reprieve against Cameroon. Onana has been left out of the national team for the upcoming AFCON tournament.
The 29-year-old has 53 caps for his country and was at his best during the African side’s ultimately unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign. AFCON begins on December 21st, with Cameroon scheduled to play Gabon, Ivory Coast and Mozambique in the group stage.
Onana’s ax came on a dramatic day for Cameroon, whose coach Mark Bliss had been sacked just days before the start of the tournament.
Onana has made 11 appearances in all competitions for Trabzonspor this season. However, his performances were reportedly good enough for club leaders to sign him on a permanent transfer.

Earlier this season, Amorim said of the goalkeeper’s loan move: “We saw Andre having a very good season at Inter. The quality is there. But we are at the club and sometimes, in the moment, things can become more and more difficult.”
“He’s a really experienced player, but at this club sometimes the pressure on details is very high. I think he understands that this requires a change. Sometimes it’s difficult to point out why. It’s a performance, it’s a moment. The bad luck of one moment was difficult for him and difficult for us. Our idea is to change the goalkeeper.”
Onana started his career with Ajax in the Netherlands before moving to Italian giants Inter Milan. He became one of Europe’s outstanding goalkeepers during his time in Serie A.

His form was enough to convince the Red Devils to pay him £43m for his services in 2023. He spent two seasons as United’s number one, although a high-profile mistake marred his game at Old Trafford.
He was ultimately allowed to leave the club this summer and was replaced by Senne Ramens, who joined United from Royal Antwerp. The Belgian made a bright start at Old Trafford despite keeping just one clean sheet in his opening seven games.
