Scott McTominay has shone at Napoli since joining the Italian giants from Manchester United, with Gary Neville suggesting he may have been the main reason for his departure.
Gary Neville has been accused by Jamie Carragher of “killing” Scott McTominay’s career at Manchester United. The Red Devils academy graduate made 255 appearances for his boyhood club before making a surprise move to Italian giants Napoli.
McTominay shone during his time at Napoli, scoring 18 goals in 53 appearances in all competitions. He won the Italian title in his debut season and was named Serie A’s best player. Former United star Neville has claimed it may have been a mistake to let him leave.
Neville said on the overlap: “What happened to Scott McTominay? Did we make a big mistake?”
Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher responded: “You’ve killed another Man United player. That’s what happened. There’s too much criticism. He’s not good enough.”
Ian Wright chimed in, saying: “I remember Gary saying we had to get rid of him. Poor Scott. He just wanted his freedom.”

But Neville insisted he was not as critical as others thought and suggested McTominay should have stayed. He added, “I never said he wasn’t good enough…not me. Seriously, I never thought they should fire him. I always said back then, he’s a representative player for 15 or 16 teams. He should never have been fired.”
Despite the defense, Neville has certainly criticized McTominay many times in the past. Speaking in 2018, he suggested the Scotland international may need to consider changing positions to pursue a career at Old Trafford.
He said: ‘McTominay, looking at him I don’t think he’s good enough on the ball to actually be a Man United midfield player.

“I think he’s a good type to play games there, but I wonder if he’s physically good if he actually ends up getting more of a centre-back position. He’s a big player. Is he sharp enough on the ball to be a central midfield player at Man United?”
McTominay could celebrate a second league win at the end of the season. The team, led by coach Antonio Conte, who helped Napoli win the Italian title last season, is in second place, just behind leaders AC Milan on goal difference.
In fact, McTominay has been repeatedly linked with a return to the Premier League. Recently, there seems to be interest from Everton. His contract with Napoli runs until 2028.
