Andre Onana suffered yet another setback when he was left out of Cameroon’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. The 29-year-old was frozen out by Ruben Amorim’s side before joining Trabzonspor on loan during the summer.
Altai Bajndir and subsequent summer signing Senne Ramens were left out of United’s set-up before Onana moved to Turkiye. He made 10 appearances for Trabzonspor, keeping three clean sheets during that period and finishing third behind Galatasaray and Fenerbahce with nine wins out of 14 matches.
Onana also played in three games for Cameroon, two of which ended in defeats for the national team. The latest setback was against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which eliminated Cameroon from competing for next summer’s World Cup.
He has been further disappointed by the announcement that he will not be representing his country at AFCON in December and possibly January, as confirmed on Cameroon FA’s Instagram page. Instead, Simon Omosola, Davis Epathy, Simon Gapandwetumbu and Edouard Sonban will head into the tournament as goalkeepers.
The caption read: “Here are the 28 #LionsIndomptables defending Cameroon’s colors at CAN Total Energy Morocco 2025,” and the accompanying image displayed small photos of those selected to take part, including United’s Brian Mbeumo.
Prominent players such as Brighton’s Carlos Baleva and former Tottenham winger Georges-Kevin Nkoudou are also included in the 28-man squad, but Vincent Abubakar has been overlooked. Onana’s exclusion was unexpected given his consistent presence in goal in all recent games.
It is a further blow to his career following his acrimonious exit from Old Trafford, with United manager Amorim giving a comprehensive assessment of Onana following his departure.
“We wish Andre the best of luck. He was really good at his job and tried to help the players. Sometimes you get the best quality in the world, but sometimes you need a change of environment to get back to your level. That was felt not only by us but also from Andre.”
