The legendary former England international and Barcelona striker, who spent nearly 30 years at the helm of the BBC’s flagship soccer program Match of the Day, celebrated his birthday by watching a top-flight match on Sunday.
Former Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker was at Selhurst Park watching Crystal Palace v Manchester United as he celebrated his 65th birthday. The former England striker watched as United battled back against Palace to take all three points, with goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount sealing victory.
TNT Sports’ cameras caught the former England international during the opening period, with commentators Darren Fletcher and Ally McCoist celebrating his 65th birthday on air.
Her son George also posted on Instagram, “Happy birthday. Keep up the good work.” Gary reshared the message on his Instagram Story.
Lineker has not held a regular hosting role since his highly publicized resignation from Match of the Day in May. At the time of his departure, he was the show’s longest-running presenter, fronting the BBC’s premier football show from 1999 to 2025.
Last month, Mr Lineker announced he would be returning to television to present ITV’s upcoming show The Box. Filming is scheduled for later this year, and the show is expected to air in 2026.
Commenting on the new venture, Lineker said: “I can’t wait to host The Box. I’ve always felt at home in the box on a football pitch. Although this is a different proposition, the basics are similar. Contestants must quickly and skillfully understand how each game works, while at the same time trying to take the initiative ahead of the competition.”
“It’s going to be unpredictable and thrilling, so I’m excited to have a front row seat to all the action!”

United’s victory in south London ensured they bounced back from Monday night’s disastrous home defeat to Everton, with the result ending an encouraging five-match unbeaten run.
Asked after the match about his team finishing in the top six, Amorim said: “At the moment I just want to evaluate the team. We need to evolve and create diversity in the way we build up. That’s the most important thing.”
