Thomas Frank slams Spurs supporters after Guglielmo Vicario was booed during Premier League home defeat to Fulham: ‘I can’t call them true Tottenham fans.’

‘1,000% sure’ – Frank is confident in how to ‘build’ Tottenham despite tone of indifference

Thomas Frank has criticized Tottenham supporters after they booed goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario in the 2-1 defeat at Fulham.

Spurs were 2-0 down after a deflected goal from Kenny Tete six minutes later, followed by a goal from Harry Wilson two minutes later.

After latching on to a wayward clearance from Vicario, 18-year-old Wilson collected the ball from Josh King and fired an audacious goal into an empty net.

Spurs responded with a much improved second half performance from Mohamed Kudus for the home side, but it wasn’t enough and they suffered another defeat at home.

Vicario was booed immediately after his mistake, but his team was booed at full time. Frank accepted his team’s booing after their fourth home defeat of the season in the Premier League, but admitted he was at fault for the booing during the match.

He told Sky Sports:

“When you’re not doing well, everything seems to go against you. The first one was a deflected shot, the second one was a mistake by Vic (Guglielmo Vicario).

“I didn’t like that the fans booed him right after and a few times afterwards. They’re not real Tottenham fans because when you’re on the pitch, everyone supports each other and does everything they can to perform.

“It’s OK for them to boo after the game, but not during the game. That’s not acceptable in my opinion.

“It’s okay for them to be frustrated. We haven’t won at home for a long time so we all want to win so badly. So it’s okay for them to boo after the game, but during the game I hope it was an incident and I hope it doesn’t happen again.”

The defeat against Fulham leaves Tottenham in 10th place in the Premier League, but they could slip to 12th depending on the results between Liverpool and Manchester United later this weekend.

It was also the end of a very difficult week for Spurs, who lost 4-1 to Arsenal last Sunday, followed by a dramatic 5-3 loss to UEFA Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in Paris in midweek.

Frank was positive about the second half of the game against Fulham, and while he is keen to end their Premier League home winless run since the 3-0 win over Burnley in August, he insists everyone at the club needs to stick to the process.

“The first half was too rushed in many ways. We wanted to get back into the game, but we couldn’t do that in the first half, but we improved a lot in the second half,” he said.

“We gained a bit of momentum and created more chances and chances, but we couldn’t get the second goal. It was an emotional performance in the second half, but I think that’s quite normal.”

“We know we really want to win at home, so it’s tough when things don’t go our way. That’s why we need to stick to the plan, stay calm and don’t get stressed out. Easier said than done.”

“With this result, we are in a situation where we lost another game. Every game has a story. This is the first six minutes of the game. We just have to keep trying. We were much better in the second half and hopefully we can learn something.”
