Manchester United are targeting Real Madrid star Federico Valverde following a clash with Xabi Alonso, but the Red Devils have a difficult history with transfer negotiations with the Spanish giants.
Manchester United are set to clash with arch-rivals Real Madrid over Federico Valverde. Real superstar Valverde has emerged as a shock target for United.
Valverde’s future at Real is in serious doubt following his fallout with manager Xabi Alonso, with the Uruguayan international said to be one of several Real players dissatisfied with Alonso’s managerial style. Valverde’s contract runs until 2029, but he is said to be considering leaving the Spanish giants unless his relationship with Alonso improves. United are one of several clubs monitoring the situation closely.
Ruben Amorim is a big fan of Valverde and would like to lure him to Old Trafford. However, Real bosses have made it clear that if Valverde wants to leave, the price will be £100m.
United value the 27-year-old at close to £70m, but there remains a huge gap between the two clubs’ valuations of Valverde. United have had problems with Real in the transfer market.

David de Gea’s move to Real collapsed dramatically in 2015, with both clubs blaming each other. Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson, who was devastated when Real signed Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009, once said he had no intention of selling Real a “virus”.
Alonso has also been seen clashing with Vinicius Junior during the first months of his contract at the Bernabéu, with the Brazilian in the middle of contract negotiations.
Despite all the politics, the player-turned-manager insists he was not surprised by the Real job despite the demands. “It’s been a job as expected. It’s a very demanding job. There are times when you need concentration, and there are times when you need to be quick. But I’m enjoying everything and the whole package that comes with it.”
“Obviously it’s tough, but I’m not the first coach to have to deal with a situation like this. It’s not a new situation. We have to know how to deal with it.”
