Former Liverpool player Dietmar Hamann believes the club have already held talks with Jurgen Klopp after Arne Slott cruelly insisted he would be sacked immediately. The reigning Premier League champions are in dire form, having lost nine of their last 12 games. Their latest setback was particularly damaging when Liverpool were soundly defeated by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
Slott’s side suffered heartbreaking defeats to Nottingham Forest and Manchester City during the international break, making it the third consecutive time they have lost by three goals. A string of lackluster performances in such a condensed period led Hamann, who won the Champions League with Liverpool, to conclude that Slott’s tenure as head coach was over.
“I think Arne Slott has lost control of the team. The team is falling apart and everyone is doing what they want, like (Mohamed) Salah before PSV’s second goal,” he told Sky Sports Germany.
“Liverpool will have big problems if they are to finish in the top four of the Premier League. I don’t believe these problems can be solved quickly or easily.
“The club will definitely discuss the manager’s post because the situation is very complicated. The end of his slot is nearing. I never expected this to happen after a great season last year, but I think his credit has run out.”
Klopp’s dramatic return has dominated speculation after he recently admitted that a return to Anfield is “theoretically possible”.
Hamann has since weighed in on the prospect, with the 52-year-old suggesting preliminary conversations may already be taking place.
He said: “Many people are already looking forward to Jurgen Klopp’s return. If you ask any of the fans, I’m sure many will say: ‘That would be great!
“What are the chances of him going back to Liverpool? I don’t know. But it will be a 10-year story. The club will already be looking at a replacement manager. I think they are talking to Klopp.”
For a return to take place, Liverpool must first sack Slott, with the Dutchman believing he deserves extra time to reverse the club’s fortunes.
After the loss against PSV, the player said, “I feel relieved and I’m fine. I have a lot of support from above.”
“Of course, it would be great if we could come back and win, but if we’re not doing well, it’s natural that there will be questions.
“I’m fine with my position. It’s not the first time I’ve been in a difficult position, but the time has come for a turnaround.”
