Paul Merson shares his predictions for Arsenal’s Premier League match against Chelsea, with a clear verdict on the title race
Paul Merson believes Arsenal can end their Premier League title race by defeating Chelsea this weekend. The Gunners could extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points with victory at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but third-placed Manchester City have a chance to close the gap when they face Leeds United 24 hours earlier.
Mikel Arteta’s side have been in great form this season, losing only once and scoring just seven goals in all competitions. The Blues are also on a roll right now, riding high with a 3-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League.
Despite this, Melson cannot imagine Chelsea beating Arsenal, although his score predictions suggest he believes the title race will continue for at least another week.

In his column for Sportskeeda, he said: “If Arsenal win, the title race is over! I expect Manchester City to win this weekend, but everything will be settled if Arsenal win.”
“I watched the match between Chelsea and Barcelona, and even before Ronald Araujo was shown a red card, they completely crushed Hansi Flick’s team.Arsenal also had a comfortable win against Bayern Munich, and their performance in the second half was amazing!”
“I don’t think Enzo Maresca needs to win this game. His goal is to finish in the top four this season and qualify for the cup. If Chelsea win this game, they will automatically become title candidates. Then the expectations from this team will change and I don’t know if it will suit them.”
“We saw Chelsea go from being top of the table around December last season to suddenly dropping down the table.
“So can Chelsea beat Arsenal? I don’t think so. I’m a Chelsea fan and I always watch this team. But I don’t think Arsenal will lose this game.”
“Chelsea are a very young team and there are always ups and downs in terms of results. I don’t think Chelsea have the experience of winning league titles yet.”
“This match will also witness a battle between two of the best midfielders in the world, Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice.
“I can’t wait to see that fight! It will be interesting to see which team Maresca plays against.” Could he be tempted to use a false nine like he did against Barcelona? Arsenal are better at the back but I think Chelsea can pick up points.
“Melson’s prediction: Chelsea 1-1 Arsenal”
A 1-1 draw, the same scoreline as last season’s encounter, would be a win-win for both sides, as Chelsea would solidify their place in the race for the top four, while Arsenal would avoid a heartbreaking defeat against potential title challengers.
Securing a point would mean a positive result for Arteta’s side, as upcoming games against Brentford, Everton, Wolves and Brighton look more favorable.
