Mason Greenwood’s impressive form at Marseille has led to suggestions that he could be recalled to the England squad as he continues to rebuild his career in France. The former Manchester United striker played a key role in Marseille’s Champions League win against Newcastle United on Tuesday night, playing against an English team for the first time since leaving Old Trafford 16 months ago. Greenwood’s only Three Lions cap came during his time at United, against Iceland in September 2020.
However, given his current stellar form, the possibility of him competing in next summer’s World Cup is a realistic goal. Despite rumors of links with the Jamaican national team, Greenwood has not given up hope of wearing an England shirt again. His Marseille team-mates also believe he deserves another chance in international football.
Since joining the French outfit for £26.6 million, the 24-year-old has made 53 appearances and found the back of the net 33 times. Before leaving Manchester permanently, Greenwood had a successful spell in Spain on loan to Getafe.
American international Timothy Weah, the son of soccer legend George Weah, believes Greenwood deserves a place in the England squad and is committed to supporting him.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper, he said: “When I talk about Mason, it feels special because it’s very rare in your life to share the pitch with such a great player and such a great person.
“We have become even better friends since I joined the team and came here. Hopefully he will be called up soon.”
“I’m very proud of him. He’s had a great season and I hope I can help him reach the heights he’s aiming for.”
Before leaving United, Greenwood faced charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Although these charges were eventually dropped, they played a key role in his exit.
England manager Thomas Tuchel has a wealth of talent at his disposal, but the German clarified in September that bringing Greenwood back was not in the cards at the time.
The Three Lions manager said: “I haven’t spoken to him before, I haven’t spoken to him or his camp.”
“My understanding was that he was trying to play for Jamaica, so we didn’t think about it. He’s not in the squad at the moment and he’s not thinking about our team.”
