Atletico Madrid have been charged by UEFA for their behavior in the stands during their 4-0 Champions League defeat to Arsenal in October.
Atlético Madrid have handed fans two fines and a one-match suspension following their behavior during a Champions League game against Arsenal earlier this season. The Spanish side were accused by UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Board (CEDB) of racist and/or discriminatory behavior and throwing objects.
In a statement, the CEDB said: “Atlético Madrid will be fined €30,000 (£26,256) for racist and/or discriminatory behavior by a supporter and will be prohibited from selling tickets to away supporters for (1) official UEFA matches.”
“The ban on ticket sales to away supporters will be suspended for one year from the date of this decision. Atlético Madrid will be fined 10,000 euros (approximately 875,200 yen) for throwing objects.”

The incident occurred during Arsenal’s 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in late October. A dominant second-half performance saw the Gunners defeat the visitors at the Emirates Stadium, securing another important win against top-flight opposition.
Victor Goqueres’ double was joined by shots by Gabriel Magalhães and Gabriel Martinelli. This all followed some pre-match incidents that appeared to have made the visiting team nervous ahead of the clash at the Emirates Stadium.
Marca newspaper reported that Atlético Madrid’s team were “angry” after they were unable to shower after training due to a lack of hot water at the stadium and the team returned to their hotel to freshen up. Arsenal later apologized for the inconvenience.
Despite these off-field issues, it was Mikel Arteta’s on-field actions that made him proud of his team’s performance. He said: “I’m very happy and proud of our performance and result against a really good team.
“I was very impressed when we analyzed them and also what we saw about them today. So we knew how difficult it was. It required a lot of aggression and a lot of patience as well. And the way they managed the game situation and manipulated their own actions was really impressive.”
“At half-time it was 0-0 so we had to be patient, even though we created a couple of big chances, but at the same time we had to increase our attacking power a little bit and set up some areas to do more damage. We did that and I think we were very effective in this Champions League as well.”
Although Arsenal won on the pitch, it was the behavior of the fans in the stands that caused controversy. Allegations of racist and/or discriminatory behavior on the part of Atlético, as well as reports of objects being thrown, resulted in fines and charges being imposed by the governing body.
The Atlético Madrid supporter is currently on a suspended sentence and could be banned from UEFA matches if he reoffends within the next year.
