Arne Slott vows Liverpool will ‘keep fighting’ after UEFA Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven

Manager Arne Slott said his Liverpool side would “keep fighting” after Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League at Anfield, their ninth defeat in 12 games.

Liverpool started the 2025/26 season with seven consecutive wins, continuing their strong momentum following last season’s Premier League title, supported by big spending in the summer.

However, Slott’s side are currently 12th in the league and 13th in the Champions League, officially in their worst form since the 1953-54 season, and have already missed out on the Carabao Cup.

Slott said his conversations with club executives have not changed, saying the team will “keep fighting” in the face of adversity.

“We’ve had the same conversation since I’ve been here,” Slott said on Thursday ahead of Sunday’s game against West Ham.

“We continue to fight and try to get better. That’s what we strive for. But the conversation is the same as it has been for the past year and a half.”

Just over two months ago, Liverpool were at the top of the Premier League, five points ahead of Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side are now 11 points ahead of the Reds domestically after defeating Bayern Munich 3-1 in north London on Wednesday night.

After a successful start to his career at Liverpool, winning the Premier League title in his debut season as manager, Slott found himself in an unprecedented position, with standards of acceptance having fallen in recent months.

“I agree that our standards are not the standards that we are used to. We think we can play better,” he said.

“Last season, when we did very well, the focus was on the individual, so I said we should focus on the team. If the opposite is happening, we should also look at the team and not the individual.”

Last season, Josep Guardiola’s Manchester City suffered a similar slump, losing to Aston Villa in December and losing nine of 12 games.

Guardiola overcame the deficit and led his team to a 3rd place finish. Slott is aiming for a similar turnaround and explained the difficult impact such a result would have on the team.

“There’s a lot of pressure when you work and play at a top club,” Slott said. “And it’s even more so when you start losing more games than this club. The players and the manager are used to it. There’s always pressure, but last season there was a lot of pressure to win the league. And now it’s a different kind of pressure because we’ve lost so many games.”

“What that does for me is that it might make my job a little bit easier because I just have to do the same thing and I don’t have to play. “It’s tough for any player if you don’t do well and you concede a goal right after three minutes. I think so. Then we played well in the first half and then we conceded 10 minutes after halftime. So it was tough. But that’s why I keep saying we have to keep fighting.”

“That’s what we did very well last season and that’s what this club aims to do. That’s the minimum we expect for 90 minutes, but it’s not always easy when the knocks keep coming.”

Liverpool’s rise has led to increased scrutiny of many key players who were key to last season’s success, including Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate.

Slott has hinted at the possibility of making changes to his line-up for Sunday’s game against West Ham, but no decisions have been made yet.

“They train with us every day and can prove themselves in the moment,” he said. “There’s always a balance of thinking if you don’t change, people should change more. We had a period this season where we lost, so we made some changes and people complained.

“We are looking into it, but we won’t be able to share the final outcome of that review on Sunday…yet.”

Slott also provided an update on the triple injury of Florian Wirtz, Alisson and Hugo Equique, and the trio’s return could be a big boost for the weekend’s fixtures.

“Alison trained with the team again today and we expect him to be available at the weekend,” Slott said.

“Wurtz will have his last day of rehabilitation tomorrow, but if all goes well he will be able to train with the team on Saturday.

“Ekitike, today was a recovery day, but they don’t expect it to be a big problem.”

West Ham are starting to steady the ship under manager Nuno Espirito Santo after a poor start to the season and the sacking of Graham Potter.

The former Nottingham Forest manager has led his team to two wins and one draw in their last three games, including an exciting 3-1 win against Newcastle United.

“He’s influencing the results,” Slott said of the West Ham manager.

“He’s performed well everywhere he’s worked in England. He’s performed well at Forest and now he’s performed well at West Ham. He’s proven to be a difficult manager to play against, not just for me but for everyone, because he always has a very good game plan.”

“They are a difficult team to beat at the moment, West Ham may have been different at the start of the season but we are playing against them now so we definitely have to be ready for the challenge.

“After our recent results, they know that playing us now is probably going to be different than it was three or four months ago.”
