Despite being down to 10 men within 14 minutes, Everton took the lead at Old Trafford thanks to Keenan Dewsbury-Hall, and it was too much for the home side, as their opponents pressed on and won 1-0.
Jordan Pickford has revealed how David Moyes’ honest message influenced Everton’s famous win at Old Trafford. The Toffees are celebrating becoming the first team in Premier League history to beat Manchester United, who were reduced to 10 men.
Idrissa Gueye was sent off within 14 minutes, but a fine goal from Keenan Dewsbury-Hall sealed victory for the visitors. And it was Moyes’ first win at Old Trafford as visitor manager in 18 attempts.
But Pickford believes Moyes should give himself credit for the impressive result after telling his players before kick-off how Everton needed to win to be considered a “proper team” against United.
Pickford said: “The manager said this before the game: ‘You guys want to be the right team and you want to push up the table. Tonight it’s time to stamp your authority and get a result.’ We know it’s not that easy, but we gave him what he wanted and we got rewarded.”
“It was a great victory and a great performance. We played some good football, but we also struggled as a team. If you suffer in the right way, you will get results.”

“Football is strange because Manchester United are in great form at the moment. If they had won they would have been in the top four and everyone is talking about them.”
“We have to look at ourselves and instead of focusing on how United are doing, we have to focus on our performance, because if we perform and make our shifts, we will get the results.”
Pickford acted as peacemaker after Guyet slapped teammate Michael Keane in the face to give his marching orders.
And when asked what happened, Mr Pickford added: “At first I didn’t know what happened. I just saw them arguing.” But the important thing is that Idrissa came and apologized.
“It’s not a good situation, but we move on from it and the important thing is that we won.”
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes no club in the country wants red cards handed out for altercations between team-mates, and although he accepted match referee Tony Harrington had applied the rules correctly by punishing Gueye, he suggested referee-in-chief Howard Webb might consider changes.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher said: “If you were at any club in this country, up and down the hierarchy, whether it was your opponent or your teammate, you would say, ‘Just give him a yellow card and get on with the game and manage the situation.’
“The rules are there, I understand that. But there’s a Howard Webb quote. We always try to talk to him about certain decisions, and he talks about how sometimes the game doesn’t want something in certain situations.”
“Most people watching tonight, if it were your team, you’d probably be thinking, ‘Okay, yellow card, get your players together, behave yourself and keep playing.’
