The top six Premier League clubs participating in this season’s competition have made a strong start to the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League.

Earlier this season, England became the first country to have five clubs win in the first round of the Champions League, followed by the Premier League’s national team repeating the feat earlier this month.

An impressive 17 wins from 24 games so far (71% win rate) bodes well for all six teams – Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Newcastle United – to reach the knockout stages.
So far, the only three games so far have been Newcastle losing 2-1 at home to Barcelona, Liverpool coming from behind 1-0 to Galatasaray and Chelsea losing 3-1 to Bayern Munich.

The formidable tally of 56 goals scored and just 17 conceded highlights the strength of the Premier League and why so many are betting on England to win this season, and highlights how the world’s richest league can leverage its financial power.

If the competition continues to yield positive results for Premier League clubs, England’s top flight will award a “bonus” Champions League spot to teams that finish fifth, as they did last season.

Currently, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City and Newcastle are in the top eight spots, which automatically qualify for the last 16 of the competition.

Spurs remain in just 10th place, while Chelsea are two places further back and remain firmly in contention.

England made history with six teams qualifying for the Champions League this season. If all six teams advance beyond league stage, it would be another milestone and another step towards an additional European performance spot being allocated to England.

It will be streamed live on TNT Sports and Discovery+ ahead of the fifth round action. With all the games still left, we’ll see how the coefficient points work towards the second half of the league…

How do coefficient points work?

UEFA calculates which two leagues will be rewarded by summing the coefficient points (association club coefficient) based on the performance of clubs in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League.

The ranking takes into account each association’s performance in European competitions from the 2021/22 season up to the 2025/26 season so far, meaning it is calculated over a rolling five-year period.

Regardless of the matchup, each league will receive 2 points for a win, but 1 point will be added for a draw, and no points for a loss.

The more a team advances in the competition, the more bonus points it receives, weighted according to the competition. At the end of the campaign, the total for each country is divided by the number of clubs that were present in Europe at the start of the season.

England have entered nine teams for the 2025/26 season. This means the country’s points tally is split into nine. Scotland started the year with five players. Hibernian and Dundee United have fallen in the qualification round, but the coefficient is still divided by 5.

This season, England and Spain each secured an additional Champions League spot after finishing in the top two on the 2024/25 table. As a result, Newcastle and Athletic Club qualified directly.

So which organizations are leading the way so far?

Based on the current results of the three UEFA competitions, England and Germany currently lead the race for the two additional Champions League qualifications available next season.

Under the format introduced at the start of the 2024/25 season (when the number of teams participating in the Champions League was expanded from 32 to 36 teams), UEFA will award additional spots to the two countries with the best overall results in European competitions during the season.

Points earned in European competitions will be halved during the qualifying round.

Clubs that reach the last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the Champions League will be awarded 1.5 points for each round, 1 point for each round of the Europa League and 0.5 points for each round of the Conference League.

The two highest annual coefficients from 2023/24 onwards will determine two additional European performance spots (one per association) for next season’s Champions League.

Why PL clubs should still aim for a top-four finish

History has shown that Premier League supremacy does not always lead to silver medals, and indeed extra spots.

Back in 2017, when Manchester United won the Europa League and qualified, five clubs made it to the knockout stages, but only two made it to the last 16, with Liverpool losing to Real Madrid in the final.

And ahead of the revamped 2024/25 Champions League season, England looked poised to claim a ‘bonus’ spot as a result of each club’s performance in Europe.

Things changed after Arsenal and Manchester City lost to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid respectively, dropping the Premier League to third place behind Serie A and the Bundesliga. This meant good news for Bologna and Borussia Dortmund.

A strong start to the Premier League would therefore be interesting for the likes of Sunderland, Bournemouth and Manchester United, who are hovering around the Champions League places after 11 matches, but nothing is guaranteed yet.
