Liverpool were unable to halt their slide with a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The Reds have lost six of their last seven Premier League games and the pressure is mounting on head coach Arne Slott.
Slott will continue his work over the winter and will be desperate to prove his team can be title challengers again next season. However, the likes of Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, Alexis Mac Allister and Federico Chiesa could soon face a rebuild as they are not guaranteed to remain at the club beyond the end of this season. And Express Sport looked at five players Slott could sign next summer to solve Liverpool’s problems.
mark gehi
Liverpool strengthened their attack in the summer with a number of exciting additions. However, they neglected their central defense as Jarrell Quansah was sent off and was not replaced.
Slott came close to signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, but the move was blocked by the Eagles in the 11th hour.
However, with his contract expiring in the summer, Liverpool are likely to make a move to sign Guehi again next year.
Alessandro Bastoni
The Merseyside giants are said to be preparing a huge offer for Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni.
The Italian international is regarded as one of Europe’s best defenders and has already helped his team keep eight clean sheets in all competitions this season.
If Bastoni, Guehi and Virgil van Dijk join the club, the Reds’ defense will once again be solid.
Elliot Anderson
Liverpool could also strengthen their defense in front of the backline. And Elliott Anderson, who showed his qualities as Forest manager at Anfield on Saturday, fit the bill perfectly.
Anderson could be a great fit for the Reds and would provide versatility in the slot in a number of midfield roles. And his energy will help reinvigorate Liverpool’s top players.
Keyes Smit
Despite Liverpool bringing in significant amounts of cash through player sales in recent years, they do not have unlimited funds to spend next summer.
Teenage sensation Kees Smit could provide the Reds with an affordable solution to strengthen their depth in the middle of the pitch, and would arrive at the club with the hopes of developing into a Premier League star.
The 19-year-old is currently plying his trade to Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, where he has excelled in the Eredivisie and UEFA Conference League.
Antoine Semenyo
Liverpool are said to be considering signing Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo. He terrorized the Reds’ defense with two goals at Anfield on the opening night of the season.
Semenyo’s intensity and work rate will suit Liverpool’s style and, at 25, his best years are surely ahead of him.
The move would make particular sense if Salah heads in from the exit, and the Cherries winger would give Liverpool new dynamism in the final third of the pitch.
