The first game back after the international break ended in disaster for the home side at Anfield, with Sean Dyche’s side routing Liverpool.
Liverpool are in 11th place after 12 games in a season that is certain to end with them giving up the Premier League title, and their sixth defeat of the season means they have lost four of their last five league games.
Speaking to the BBC after the match, Dutch veteran Van Dijk did not hesitate to give his assessment.
“We conceded too many easy goals. Obviously, they scored again from a set-piece. You can ask if he was in front of Alisson, but that was important, so we are 1-0 down. We were not good in terms of fight, challenge and fight. We rushed too much. It’s a very difficult situation at the moment.”
“There was tension after the goal, but not before. We tried to hurry things up, but that’s what people are when you’re in a difficult situation. We cleared it before and at the end. We’re in a very difficult situation. You can’t get out of it just by talking about it. It’s going to take a lot of effort.”
“That’s a problem. Everyone in the team has to take responsibility as well. Football is a team and everyone has to take responsibility. We have to digest this and take it seriously. We have to work harder. We have to keep moving forward.”
“Obviously everyone is disappointed, but losing at home to Nottingham Forest was a very poor result in my eyes, so that’s the least I can say about it.
“It’s too easy for us to concede goals. We all have to look in the mirror. I’ve been at this club for a long time and we’ve overcome adversity. We’ll bounce back, but it won’t happen overnight. I’m not quitting and we’ll keep moving forward.”
“I can’t judge what the supporters are doing if they leave early. I know the fans have been with us through the ups and downs. They will be with us when we get out of this, because we will get out of this.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slott spoke about the psychological aspects of the defeat, broadly supporting the idea that his players didn’t want confidence.
“I think in the first 30 minutes the players did what we expected, played with energy and created enough chances to be all up. But then we conceded a set piece and that completely changed the flow and the game,” he told Sky Sports.
“After that, I think we struggled very hard to find chances, to find chances that we were able to find in the first 30 minutes.
“So I tried to make some changes. I tried to make some adjustments, but it didn’t work out the way you guys wanted it to. I was very disappointed because that’s what I wanted to do. And as I said just now, at the end of the day, when things go well and when things don’t go well, at the end of the day, it’s always my fault.”
Asked if it was a lack of confidence issue, he added: “I don’t feel that way, and I didn’t feel that way in the first 30 minutes either.”
“But what you can see is that after losing 1-0 we struggled after that and struggled in the sense that we didn’t create as many chances as we did 30 minutes ago.
“We tried to cheer them up and give them the information they needed to start the second half well, but we were down 2-0 at the start of the second half.
“It was another big blow for us and a big confidence booster for them. And the players kept trying. I can’t blame them. But it was very difficult for us to find openings, and when we did, they blocked all our shots.”
