Ruben Amorim’s strict training decisions show his plans for Manchester United’s future

Manchester United continue their rigorous training regime under Ruben Amorim despite the lack of European football, with room for more rest during the week

Manager Ruben Amorim still keeps Manchester United stuck to a relentless training schedule, despite the lack of European football placing fewer demands on his players.

Without a midweek trip to Europe, there will be more time away from the training ground, but the Portuguese coach still keeps his players active six days a week. Monday is their designated day off, and the Times reports that Amorim only gave his players two days off once.

This underlines his desire to improve United’s form after a poor last campaign. His unique system also requires special attention, as Amorim sticks to his philosophy and the players must understand it.

The busy schedule also suggests that the United manager wants to get his players fit for this season’s goal of returning to European football.

In a normal week, United’s stars would have Monday off before heading into an intense session on Tuesday. Wednesday will include more than two hours of work before Thursday’s recovery session. Friday will be a shorter, more tactical approach. Saturday will be game day and Sunday will be recovery.

To ensure that United’s players fully understood his wishes, Amorim confessed that he physically guided them into positions rather than sitting through reams of video footage. He said, “I was a football player. Videos longer than 12 minutes? Forget it! Because you lose concentration. Instead of videos, I do things like walking or jogging. That’s one way: to show videos.”

Almost all of United’s rivals are playing some form of European football this season. Chelsea, Newcastle, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Liverpool all have expanded their schedules with midweek action, while the Red Devils have had extra rest.

That could be an advantage for them later in the season. United missed out on a Champions League place last season when they lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final, but Amorim insists they were not equipped to compete at Europe’s top table.

“I don’t think we were ready to play in Europe,” he said earlier this season. “That’s how I feel. We need time to develop as a team if we want to have a strong game in the Champions League and play in the Premier League.

“Last season we said we need time to prepare for every match. The games are really competitive so we need to build the foundations and then perform. And in the future we need to create a Europe where everyone can play.”
