Benjamin Sesco limped off Manchester United’s last game before the international break against Tottenham, but manager Ruben Amorim has given an update on him and the rest of the players.
Manchester United will be without Benjamin Sesco for Monday night’s Premier League game against Everton. Sesco limped off from United’s dramatic draw with Tottenham before the international break, but Ruben Amorim gave an update on the striker in his pre-match press conference.
The player, who joined from RB Leipzig for £74m in the summer, was removed from Slovenia international duty, much to the displeasure of the Slovenian national team manager, and was absent from United’s training session on Friday morning.
Amorim confirmed Sesco will miss the game against Everton and could miss further in the coming weeks. “He will be out for a few weeks,” the United manager said. “It’s not that serious. We need to be careful. He’s feeling better.”
Asked if the young striker would be absent during the AFCON period when fellow forward Brian Mbeumo will be absent, Amorim added: “It will be more or less the same time. I don’t want to say for sure, but I think Ben will be back when they go to camp.”
Harry Maguire and Kobie Mainu also missed training at Carrington on Friday. Amorim said Maguire was “not ready” to play on Monday, but Mainu was scheduled to train on Saturday with a view to featuring against the Toffees.

“Maguire is not ready,” Amorim said. “Coby didn’t train today, but I think we’ll see Koby tomorrow, so we’ll see.” He added: “Other players also have opportunities, like the under-21 players. You’ll see it’s not ideal. They’re very important to the team.”
Amorim also said that although Lisandro Martinez is still unavailable, the defender is “close” to making his long-awaited return. United have been without a centre-back since January when he suffered a serious knee injury, but the Argentina international has now returned to training.
Sesco has made 12 appearances for United so far, scoring two goals and providing one assist. His absence means Amorim will have to adapt his system, likely using Matheus Cunha as a false No. 9 with Amad Diallo and Mbeumo on the wing. United are seventh in the Premier League, unbeaten in five games and level with the other four teams on 18 points.
Amorim previously suggested that United could be forced to represent Mbeumo at AFCON for Cameroon in the January transfer window. “Of course there would be problems there (AFCON), but we already knew that,” he said.
“Since it’s one game a week, we knew there would be a lot of players not playing. So we knew it was going to be difficult to deal with that situation. Let’s see when opportunities open up and see if we can improve the team and try to repair something that happened. Until then, we have to take our chances. We’ll see.”
