Ruben Amorim’s 2026 priorities revealed, with Wolves star Joao Gomez becoming the latest Premier League midfielder linked with a move to Manchester United
If Manchester United want to sign Joao Gomez from Wolves, they will need to convince him to abandon his ambitions to play for Liverpool. The Red Devils are targeting a midfielder in 2026, with Gomez, 24, linked with a move to Old Trafford.
United are eyeing a proven Premier League star as the next step in manager Ruben Amorim’s rebuild, having attempted to sign Carlos Baleva in the final weeks of the summer transfer window. Brighton ace Baleva is on the shortlist, as well as Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson, Crystal Palace playmaker Adam Wharton and Gomez.
The Wolves midfielder is in his third full season at Molineux, having joined from Flamengo in January 2023 for around £15 million. Gomez signed a new five-year contract with Wolves in April, but amid a disastrous start to the season with nine losses and two draws from his opening 11 games, there are fears he could leave the club at the bottom of the Premier League.
Reports from Portugal suggest that United are planning a move, with mirror football likely having to wait until the summer as Wolves have no intention of releasing key players in January. This is not the first time Gomez has played with a target on his back, having been linked with Liverpool during his time at Flamengo, and has made it clear how he feels about joining.
“Liverpool is the team I want to play for,” Gomez told ESPN Brazil at the time. “I have the biggest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is the biggest dream for me and for my family, and it’s my biggest dream in football.”

United’s return to the Champions League for the first time in three seasons could go a long way in convincing the Brazilian to move to Old Trafford. There are already defenders of Gomez in Mr. Amorim’s dressing room.
Matheus Cunha played alongside the 24-year-old at both Wolves and Brazil and likened him to United teammate Casemiro. “He’s a little older, but I put Casemiro’s name in there to show where Joao Gomez will arrive,” Cunha said.

“I think there is a possibility that Joao will arrive. He is very humble and works hard. Then good teams will come like a gift.”
“He’s an incredible player on the pitch. I feel very secure. I feel like if there’s a midfielder behind me I might lose the ball. He also played very well for the national team.”
Gomez was not called up by manager Carlo Ancelotti for the latest Brazil squad after making his debut last year. He will be hoping to be the driving force behind Wolves’ survival push, improving their chances of playing in the World Cup and opening the door for a big move in the summer.
