Sky Sports presenter Joe Wilson has opened up about his battle with cancer, revealing he feared he was going to die and was “preparing for the worst” after hearing the shocking news.

The 41-year-old was diagnosed with cervical cancer in June 2022 after undergoing a routine smear test. Wilson has now been cancer-free for two years, but went through a traumatic ordeal after her diagnosis. Further tests confirmed that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, requiring six weeks of treatment before she was diagnosed with a complete cure in June 2023.

The broadcaster, who joined Sky Sports in 2011, had undergone radiotherapy, chemotherapy and brachytherapy, an internal treatment of targeted radiotherapy. Although the treatment saved her life, she was forced into early menopause, which greatly affected her career as a presenter.

Wilson was diagnosed with cancer just two years after giving birth to daughter Mabel in 2020. And as part of Sky Sports News’ new documentary ‘Football, Cancer and Me’, the presenter recalls the fear he felt during the ordeal, revealing he thought he was going to die but didn’t want to burden those around him with the news.

“I felt like I had been hit by a truck. I really thought I was going to die. I was preparing for the worst, but I guess I have to.”

“Actually, I didn’t tell anyone. I didn’t want anyone to wear it.

“If someone can see this and feel something is wrong and call their doctor, that’s worth having a conversation.”

In the documentary, Wilson spoke to Sky Sports News colleague Emma Saunders and former manager Tony Mowbray about his battle with cancer. Former Middlesbrough and Blackburn manager Mowbray revealed his diagnosis of bowel cancer last year.

After being diagnosed with thyroid cancer, Sanders developed a brain infection that required surgery. She falls into a coma, leaving a large scar that shocks her partner, football manager Will Still.

The former Southampton manager said: “The scariest part was the surgery itself. She went down perfectly fine and then five or six hours later she came back with this huge wound. I wasn’t ready for that.”

“The hardest part was being in a different country and trying to run a football club at the same time. I always carry that guilt.”
