Liverpool star Andy Robertson turned the spotlight on Diogo Jota on Tuesday night as he celebrated Scotland’s World Cup qualification, but he was forced to hold back tears.
Andy Robertson tearfully paid tribute to Diogo Jota shortly after Scotland’s historic World Cup qualification. The Liverpool star revealed that he often discussed the tournament with the late Portugal star.
Scotland defeated Denmark 4-2 to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1998. Stoppage-time goals from Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean sealed a late victory for Scotland as they defeated their opponents in their qualifying group on Tuesday night.
The Nationals took the lead twice early in the game through Scott McTominay and Lawrence Shankland, but Robertson endured moments of uncertainty between those goals. Following VAR intervention, the Liverpool ace awarded a penalty, bringing Denmark back into the tie.
But Robertson was able to celebrate as the final whistle rang out and Hampden Park erupted in jubilation. And after a day in which Jotta touched Robertson’s heart, the late Liverpool superstar is back on the front lines.
Jota tragically passed away in the summer at the age of 28, leaving Robertson, his family and the football world heartbroken in a car accident.

Robertson said after the game: “I’ve been hiding it well, but I wasn’t feeling well today. I know my age. This could be my last chance to go to the World Cup.”
“I couldn’t get my mate Diogo Jota out of my mind today. We talked a lot about the World Cup together.
“He missed the Qatar game due to injury and I was absent because Scotland were out, so I’m sure he’ll be smiling at me somewhere tonight.
“I couldn’t get him out of my head all day. I had a little trouble in the room earlier. I think I hid it well from the boys and I’m really glad it turned out the way it did.”
Mr Robertson also reflected on Scotland’s achievements.
“This group of boys, this group of staff is the best group I’ve ever been around,” he said. “The coach’s speech before the game was unbelievable.
“He had the big moments that we had. When we qualified for the Euros, he didn’t really remember, but we were in Wundervaal. He said, ‘Let’s do it again.’
“We were very emotional. It will be remembered as one of the best nights of my life because we were able to do it for him, the staff and our entire family.”
