Manchester United are enjoying their best run under Ruben Amorim, with new goalkeeper Senne Lamence proving a good fit with Sir Alex Ferguson and an unbeaten run in their last five games.
Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Senne Lamence’s performance as “outstanding” and spoke about his future as Manchester United’s new No.1.
The Belgian recently joined the club, having signed as an unknown quantity in the summer. Goalkeeping has been a problem position for United for several seasons, with Andre Onana struggling to convince during his two-year spell.
Somewhat surprisingly, he was allowed to leave on loan and headed to Türkiye in the summer. He was represented by Altai Bajndir, but failed to produce results, and on deadline day the club opted to sign Lamence from Royal Antwerp in a deal worth £18 million.
The Belgian kept a clean sheet on his debut against Sunderland and was also instrumental in United’s memorable victory against Liverpool as they climbed through the table on a five-game unbeaten run.
Ferguson told Raceday RTV: “Well, the signs… there were some good signs for the manager, especially the goalkeeper, who was outstanding. He’s only played three or four games but he’s looking very good.”

“Obviously, the new signings from Wolves and Brentford, Mbeumo and Cunha, have added to that. We need success at United, so I hope the manager has a little bit of success. The signs are improving. I think back-to-back wins are always something to expect for a team like United, but they’ve gone through a cycle where waiting and patience brings improvement, and they’re enjoying it now.”
Ramens had only made 52 appearances in the Belgian Pro League before moving to the Premier League, but Amorim has shown great confidence in the 23-year-old, who has shown a solid presence at the back.
Ferguson himself was able to rely on two excellent goalkeepers during his trophy-laden spell. Peter Schmeichel proved to be an inspirational signing when he arrived on British shores, and Edwin van der Sar was the cornerstone of his later success.
It was the Scot who signed David de Gea just before his retirement in 2013. The Spaniard was the team’s number one for more than a decade and won the Player of the Year award a record four times, but he was allowed to leave when his contract expired in 2023 and Onana was brought in as his replacement.
