Arsenal star Gabriel is a major doubt for the North London derby after scans revealed a thigh injury. The defender limped off during Brazil’s 2-0 win at the Emirates on Saturday and appeared visibly distressed after the game. The Brazilian Football Association announced on Sunday that the player will not be included in the squad for Tuesday’s friendly against Tunisia in France.
A statement read: “Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhães was re-examined this Sunday and imaging tests revealed a muscle injury in his right thigh. As a result, he will not be with the team for the game against Tunisia in Lille. No other players will be called up to replace him.”
The news confirms Arsenal’s worst fears ahead of next Sunday’s game against Tottenham at the Emirates. Gabriel has been instrumental for Arsenal this season, contributing both defensively and offensively, and the Gunners will be hoping he doesn’t end up out for an extended period of time.
Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti expressed regret over the 27-year-old’s injury, saying: “Bad? I don’t know, but he has a problem with his adductor muscle and it will need to be examined by the medical staff tomorrow.”
“It’s really disappointing, it’s really disappointing. When players are injured, I hope they recover quickly and well.”
This follows Riccardo Calafioli’s return to Arsenal from the Italy international, but his injury is not thought to be serious.
Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso said that although Calafioli could have played in the final World Cup qualifiers, he was allowed to leave camp early out of consideration for the club.
He said: “Calafiori left training camp. We tried Calafioli and he had some problems. We appreciate his commitment. He could have stayed here for a week and maybe played, but that wouldn’t have been fair to him or Arsenal.”
