Premier League issues second legal threat ‘in explosive letter’ | Soccer | Sports

The Premier League is reportedly once again threatened with legal action if controversial new financial rules are passed. On Friday, clubs will vote on whether to introduce “anchoring” next season.

The rule, known as a type of salary cap, limits the amount clubs can spend to five times the amount paid to clubs at the bottom of the Premier League. It has been reported that the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) has already threatened legal action.

The Daily Mail has now reported that if the rules are passed, three major soccer agencies will become members. Agents CAA Stella, CAA Base and Wasserman are said to have all made their positions clear to Premier League leaders.

The three agencies support several high-profile players who currently play or have played in the Premier League. Clients include Everton’s Jack Grealish, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze, Liverpool’s Curtis Jones, Man City’s John Stones and Ivan Toney, who is rumored to be returning to the league in January.

The two agencies are said to have contacted each other through major law firms, arguing that the introduction of the rules would violate competition law. It has also been reported that he intends to take legal action if passed.

This stance reflects that of both the PFA and Manchester United and Manchester City. Both clubs are said to believe that a transfer could be detrimental to the Premier League and could make it easier for talented players to leave for other countries.

A vote on whether to consider the new rules was held last year, with 16 clubs voting in favor. For the move to materialize, 14 clubs will need to vote in the affirmative.

The proposed new rules are thought to bring the league more in line with UEFA’s SCR (Team Cost Ratio) rules, which allow teams to spend up to 70 per cent of their revenue on their own. These rules have been in place for several seasons across Europe and already govern clubs participating in European competitions.

PFA chief executive Maheta Molango spoke out against the potential new rules last week, saying: “There is a tendency in football to think that we are above the law. The reality is that you cannot artificially limit someone’s ability to make a living because it cannot withstand a legal challenge.”

“We have made it very clear to the Premier League that we oppose this, but the Premier League themselves are aware that there are clubs within their own country who will legally challenge this action even before the PFA does this.

“At the end of the day, only the lawyers win. We want to talk about football, not legal bills.”The Premier League was contacted by the Express for comment.

In response to the PFA’s objections so far, a spokesperson said: ‘We disagree with the PFA’s views on the proposed financial rules and the extensive consultation process we have undertaken with clubs and other stakeholders.

“The PFA has had numerous opportunities since March 2024 to provide feedback and shape the proposals and the principles underlying them. Where the League has received feedback on the new financial system from stakeholders, including the PFA, we have carefully considered it and incorporated it, where appropriate, into the development of the draft rules.”

“It is the League’s aim to maintain the balance between the values and competitiveness of the Premier League and to ensure that clubs are run in a financially sustainable manner.

“We are working with clubs and they will continue to assess the proposals. They will have the opportunity to vote on them later this month.”
