Liverpool’s misery continued after their loss to Man City, their seventh loss in their last 10 games, with Alan Shearer insisting they are unlikely to win anything this season.
Alan Shearer has insisted that Liverpool are out of the running to win the Premier League and that they “can’t win anything” unless things improve following a drastic slump in the opening weeks of the season.
The Reds have had a relentless start to the year, topping the table with five wins on the bounce, but have been in a slump since losing to Crystal Palace in late September. Arne Slott has seen his side lose seven of their last 10 games in all competitions.
That includes losing five of the last six league games. Arsenal currently hold a seven-point lead over Liverpool, with Manchester City also ahead of them.
Josep Guardiola’s side outscored them on Sunday at the Etihad with a 3-0 win after the Reds could barely fight back. It’s a cruel reality check, and Shearer believes he could easily finish the season without a trophy.
He told Betfair: “If Liverpool continue to play like they did against Manchester City, they won’t win anything. They’ll be kicked out of whatever competition they’re in. They’ve got the FA Cup and the Champions League, but now that they’ve lost five games I think the league is over for them.”

“I don’t think they’re in the title race right now. Probably between now and the end of the season they’ll have to win every game. I don’t think that’s possible. So I think their title race is over. For Liverpool it’s the Champions League or the FA Cup, but they won’t be able to win any of them unless they improve anyway.”
Liverpool started the year as defending champions and finished a summer in which they spent £400m, including two signings that broke the British transfer record. However, the team’s times have not improved because some of its big names have not been able to produce results.
In the lead-up to City, Liverpool defeated Aston Villa and backed that up a few days later by defeating Real Madrid in the Champions League. Shearer thought this could be the moment to reignite their stalled campaign.
However, they were unable to build on that success, revealing many familiar flaws. “It was a bit of a surprise because I thought the Real Madrid game might be a turning point for them,” Shearer said.
“That could have been a signal for them to say, ‘Let’s go, let’s do this, let’s carry on for the rest of the season,’ but it really went back to where it was a few weeks ago. They were really flat and really poor defensively.”
