Newcastle have not had a strong start to the season, with Eddie Howe’s side languishing in 14th place in the table – here are four managers who could replace the Englishman mid-season
It wasn’t long ago that Eddie Howe looked untouchable. But after Newcastle’s rocky start to the new season, winning just three of their opening 11 league games, the idea of club and manager parting ways no longer seems far-fetched.
To be fair to the Englishman, he’s been treated a little badly. Newcastle’s pre-season was completely disrupted by the prolonged Alexander Isak turmoil, during which the club also missed out on several important transfer targets.
The season got off to a good start, with the only losses coming against strong opponents such as Liverpool, Arsenal and Barcelona. However, three defeats in their last four Premier League games have seen the Magpies drop to 14th in the table, overshadowing St James’ Park.
It was revealed earlier this week that Newcastle’s owners have no immediate plans to change their management team. Still, that stance could change quickly if bad results continue.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at four potential candidates to replace Howe if he is fired midway through the season or decides to step down.

Andoni Iraola
Andoni Iraola, who has been with both Manchester United and Chelsea this season, is clearly someone to be admired. He did wonders for Bournemouth, proving he can punch above his weight in a side that doesn’t have much of a budget and loses more or less key players every summer.
Bringing his fresh, attacking ideas to Newcastle could really add a spark to their talented squad, while the club’s greater resources and dreams of European glory could be the perfect next adventure for the innovative Spaniard.
Iraola is all about combining young talent with high-energy play, which suits Newcastle’s current set-up. His smooth adaptation to English football makes him an interesting pick, but they may need to act quickly to prevent him from falling into the hands of opponents.
Oliver Glasner
Another prominent figure in English football is Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner. The Austrian not only won the club’s first major silver medal last season, but he also turned the club into a team no one likes to play against.
Newcastle’s financial strength could tempt him into a bigger challenge, especially given his reputation for elevating mid-table teams. However, with reports of interest from Manchester United and Bayern Munich, Glasner may be aiming even higher.
Glasner, who guided Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League glory in 2022, brings a proven European pedigree and experience that is just what Newcastle’s continental ambitions club will value. His team combines defensive discipline with attacking flair, making them the ideal combination for a Newcastle team looking to turn things around.
Xavi
Appointing Xavi would be a significant gamble, but one that could well pay off. The Spaniard has been out of work since leaving Barcelona at the end of the 2023/24 season and is the only free agent on this list. His glittering playing career would instantly inject star power and glamor into Newcastle’s project. PIF will definitely appreciate such brilliance.
However, his limited managerial experience remains a clear concern, not just in England but in general. Barcelona’s team shined at its best and won La Liga in the 2022/23 season. At worst, my back was worryingly fragile.
Xavi’s dedication to possession-based football would mark a major shift from Newcastle’s more physical, counter-attacking approach under Howe. But that same philosophy may be just what the Magpies need to evolve into a more complete and entertaining team.
Kieran McKenna
At the start of last season, Kieran McKenna made headlines for his successive promotions, defying all odds and leading Ipswich to the Premier League. However, after a disappointing season that ended in relegation, their blossoming slowed down a bit.
Still, his track record of success against underdogs could make him a great match for Newcastle as they look to improve their form. The club’s deep pockets could also be reflected in smart coaching backed by data.
McKenna is focused on developing players rather than simply signing new ones, which could breathe new life into Newcastle’s squad. Furthermore, his tactical flexibility and inspirational ability make him a modern and forward-thinking option for the Magpies.
It would be a bold appointment, but a potentially great one.
