Alejandro Garnacho’s transfer trick saves Manchester United from nightmare scenario

Alejandro Garnacho has been in good form for Chelsea in recent weeks, but Manchester United fans may be worried about whether the former player will be able to thrive under manager Enzo Maresca.

Manchester United are protecting themselves with a clause in case Chelsea decide to sell Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine had a bit of a rocky start to his new season with the Blues, spending two of his first five games on the bench and only starting in the Carabao Cup match against Lincoln.

However, the 21-year-old has recently become manager Enzo Maresca’s first-choice left winger and seems to be coming into his own. Under his guidance, Garnacho has two goals and two assists in his last four appearances.

Following his goal in the defeat to Sunderland, Garnacho also scored off the bench in the Champions League against Qarabag. The 21-year-old continued his form in last weekend’s win over Wolves, assisting goals from Maro Gusto and Pedro Neto.

This will no doubt put a smile on Chelsea’s head coach’s face, but United supporters may be worried that the club have once again let go of a player who could thrive elsewhere. However, United appear to have been well aware of the situation, especially given Chelsea’s current transfer strategy.

The Blues are known for signing young talent on long-term deals, which is further evidenced by Garnacho’s contract running until 2032. The goal is to develop a young team and, at the right time, release players who are well into their careers at a profit.

The best example of this is the decision to sell Noni Madueke to Arsenal, with Chelsea earning close to double what they paid. United clearly had Chelsea’s tactics in mind, as they included a 10 per cent sell-on clause in Garnacho’s contract.

This means that if Chelsea were to move him for twice the £40m they paid to sign him, Ruben Amorim’s side would stand to gain £8m from the sale. Garnacho bid farewell to Old Trafford after a public spat with Amorim over limited game time in the Europa League final.

The player said, “I played helping the team in every round until the final, but I don’t know if I’ll play 20 minutes today. The final will affect (my decision), but it will also affect the whole season and the club’s situation.I’m going to enjoy the summer and see what happens after that.”

Now looking for a fresh start at Chelsea, Garnacho wants to prove Amorim wrong. United Airlines, on the other hand, will likely be satisfied if the divestment clause ultimately proves fruitful.
