Wolves were considering appointing Rob Edwards from Middlesbrough as their next manager and despite their approach being rejected, the Championship club sacked the manager ahead of Saturday’s match.
Wolves’ move to sign Rob Edwards appears to be one step closer after Middlesbrough opted to sack their manager ahead of Saturday’s game against Birmingham City.
Molineux officials say the former player is the frontrunner to replace Vitor Pereira, who was sacked following last weekend’s defeat to Fulham. Middlesbrough initially rejected an approach from Wolves, but Edwards has expressed interest in a move.
As a result, the Championship side decided not to allow Edwards to be in the squad for Saturday’s 3pm game, talkSPORT reported. The Middlesbrough manager was not supervising first-team training on Friday and his pre-match press conference was also cancelled.
Middlesbrough’s strong start to the season has seen Edwards’ stock rise, and they currently sit third in the Championship, five points behind league leaders Coventry. He previously managed Luton in the Premier League when they were in the top flight.
Wolves had been in talks to bring Gary O’Neill back to Molineux, but that didn’t materialize and club leaders had to look elsewhere, leading to Edwards.

Edwards previously spoke about the Wolves vacancy: “You know with my relationship with the club (Wolves), I’m fully focused on this job here, which is a great job, and trying to turn things around. It’s all speculation anyway. I’m never going to be drawn into something that’s all hypothetical, and I don’t want to be drawn into it.”
“I love being the manager of Middlesbrough and I like to think about it. All I can say is that I’m not thinking about anything because my concentration is solely on this. It’s all been told to me by my daughter.”
Wolves have also discussed former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, but the Middlesbrough manager remains the team’s top man. He played for the club as a defender and was part of the club’s coaching staff, working with the U18 team in 2014 and moving up to a first-team coaching role in 2015. He then became head coach of the Under-23 team in 2019, a role he held until leaving in 2021 to join Forest Green Rovers and further his ambitions.
Wolves are bottom of the Premier League and remain the only team without a win in English football’s top four divisions this season.
