Ruben Amorim believes he was lucky to have kept his job given his record with Manchester United, and believes he was unlucky to lose the Europa League final ahead of a rematch with Tottenham.
Ruben Amorim admits he is “really lucky to be here” given his terrible record as Manchester United’s manager, but is happy the club chose to keep him by his side during a difficult first year that ended with them losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
It was only recently that the Portuguese manager recorded back-to-back wins in the Premier League, but it was inconsistency. Amorim was able to turn that into three wins on the bounce, but had to deal with constant noise surrounding his future.
Amorim oversaw United finishing in 15th place last season, their worst ever finish in the Premier League. It hasn’t been a convincing start to the season, with defeat in Europe meaning he was never able to get his season back on track, but he is still backed.
The former Sporting Lisbon manager was reluctant to take over mid-season and has struggled to put his philosophy into practice. Despite this, he defiantly sticks to his principles, which did not save him in the Europa League final.
Amorim insisted United deserved to win on the night as it was the first time the sides faced each other since Saturday’s encounter in Bilbao, but the 40-year-old is well aware that the patience given to him is a huge compliment.

He said: “I’m really lucky to be here. I know it’s also important for people to understand how lucky I am to have this opportunity. If you look at the game, I think we deserved to win. In the end, it doesn’t matter. It’s hard to see a manager who won a European Cup leave and another one stay.”
“But sometimes winning more important trophies can be the difference in the future. So I think that’s what Manchester United are thinking, to give the manager time and see what’s going on. So all I’d say about that question is we’re really lucky to have the support at this club.”
Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently came out and hinted that he intended to give Amorim a three-year contract period to prove he was the man to take United forward. Every time a loss occurs under Amorim’s watch, the Ineos boss hits back at the noise.
The Portuguese manager admitted how much pressure the hat-trick took off him as Tottenham seek their fifth league win.
“What I think is, we can win every game. Let’s work on every detail to win every game. Everything is very close. Close and close. Three weeks can change everything. Everything has changed. Four weeks ago we were having a completely different conversation.”
