Despite being booed by some supporters during Saturday afternoon’s game against Manchester United, Thomas Frank remained in Tottenham’s substitute slot. The North London side played against the Red Devils on Saturday afternoon, ending in a 2-2 draw.

Frank’s former Brentford star Brian Mbumo turned the game around with only late goals from substitute Matthijs Tell and Richarlison giving the Red Devils the lead. Matthijs de Ligt secured a share of the spoils with a late header.

Frank, who only took over in the summer, was criticized by those inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The decision to replace goal scorer Tell with 11 minutes left was met with boos from the home fans.

But Frank continues to defend his decision, insisting that every change he makes is an effort to ensure victory. “Sometimes you’re lucky, but of course every time I make a decision to substitute a player, it’s always with the aim of helping the team win, getting back into the game or finishing the game at all costs,” he said at the post-match press conference.

“The one goal is to win the game. Obviously Matisse did a good job, great goal, great involvement and overall I think we played a good game so we’re positive but we need a bit of freshness.”

Asked if he could hear the boos from the fans, he replied: “Every time I make a decision, all I say is it’s for one purpose: to make the team better.”

Another decision Frank made throughout the game was to leave out Argentine defender Cristian Romero. But Tottenham’s manager admitted his departure was merely precautionary.

Frank added, “Yeah, he’s just finished physically. He just came back from an injury. He’s fine.”

The Tottenham manager was also asked if his sending off could have affected De Ligt’s final goal, but insisted it would have made little difference.

He said: “Yeah, but in his position he wouldn’t have been near the goal anyway, so it would have been a cross from the side and he would have been in the middle zone at that time and it would have been at the back post so it wouldn’t have affected anything.”

Tottenham won five of their opening 11 games and moved into third place in the Premier League in November’s international competition.
