Manchester United legend Bryan Robson agrees with Jim Ratcliffe that Ruben Amorim needs three years at Old Trafford and is a big fan of Brian Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Manchester United legend Bryan Robson says Ruben Amorim needs three seasons at Old Trafford before a proper decision is made on the Portuguese head coach. A month ago, Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe said the former Sporting CP manager would be given three years to prove himself, but Robson believes Amorim needs that to truly settle down.
The Portuguese manager signed Brian Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha this summer and Robson has been impressed with them so far. Captain Marvel believes that the Red Devils have already improved with this addition.
“As a manager myself, I always felt that as a manager you need three years to really set up your team to achieve what you want to achieve,” Robson said. “It’s still early days for him and we’ve signed a really good contract. You can see we’re getting better little by little and the club has to give him that time.”
“The fans have been really patient with him and the players are just playing the best football they can and supporting the manager.
“Mbeumo and Cunha are both quality players. I feel they will get better and better as the season progresses and they will get used to the quality that the other players have.”

“Casemiro is a great ball-runner and Bruno Fernandes has had two great seasons. He’s started the season a bit slow, but when he’s in top form, we have great quality in the team to score and create goals.”
Fernandes, the club captain, was sometimes criticized for his body language and lack of leadership skills. In February, Roy Keane accused the Portuguese midfielder of not being a “fighter”.
“When you’re playing well, everyone’s happy and no one says anything,” Robson explained. “When you start slow like Bruno has this season, people always want to criticize.
“Bruno is a quality player and a great presence at the club. He is very humble, greets everyone and has good friendships with people.
“They say he’s not tough on tackles, but not all players can do that. Some players are tacklers, some are playmakers. Bruno is that.”
Manchester United have won five of their 10 Premier League games so far this season, including defeating Liverpool at Anfield. At the moment, they are only two points behind second-placed Manchester City.
“We’re doing well, a little bit better than last year,” Robson added. “But if we want to get up there, we want to be a little more solid and not concede too many goals.
“For me, we have the quality and ability now, especially with the new players, and we will be able to go to Europe and hopefully play in the Champions League and have an even better time. I think we can do that this year, especially being away from Europe, the players are a little bit fresher and there won’t be as many suspensions.”
“I hope we can have a much better season than last season. I think we can qualify for Europe. It’s really possible. After that, we need a little more quality and confidence to actually qualify for the Champions League.”
Bryan Robson spoke at the North West Football Awards where he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to football as a player and manager.
