Manchester United’s young midfielder Koby Mainu will not be on the pitch against Tottenham due to injury. Mainu did not join the team traveling to London on Friday.
Coach Ruben Amorim did not provide any specific news regarding the squad in Thursday’s pre-match press conference, but it was confirmed that Mainu was sidelined due to injury and will miss the game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Jack Fletcher was called into the squad in place of Mainu.
The move continues United’s impressive 88-year record of featuring academy graduates in every game squad. United were proud to include the academy graduate in their squad, completing an incredible streak of 4,332 games.
“I don’t want to be the guy who broke that record,” Amorim said in September, stressing the importance of this tradition. “If you look at Manchester United’s past, it’s built on kids who grew up here and stayed here for a long time. I think that should be our aim in the future. So I’ll try to keep that going.”
Mainu is yet to start a Premier League game this season. His only start came in the Carabao Cup second round match against Grimsby Town at Blundell Park.
The 20-year-old expressed a desire to go out on loan during the summer transfer window in order to gain more regular playing time, but Amorim rejected the request, explaining that Mainu was in competition with Bruno Fernandes.
So far this season, Mainu has appeared in seven league games, all coming off the bench.
